Salvia divinorum, the legal (in some states) hallucinogenic Mexican sage, is the latest meme to hit YouTube. Stoners and bored teens across the U.S. and Europe have been uploading videos of their experiences smoking the herb.
The videos, currently topping out at 3,400 on YouTube, vary from hilarious to pathetic as users go from sober to a zombie-like state. Most of the clips follow a common theme -- trying to explain what it feels like to be high on diviner's sage (one of the drug's many nicknames) -- while others just show people tweaking out like the one at right (note to self: don't ever smoke salvia with these guys).
The powerful hallucinogen, which can be smoked, chewed, or taken as an extract, can produce experiences ranging from uncontrollable laughter to much more intense and profoundly altered states such as seeing inanimate objects or thinking you're traveling through time and space (woah!). Unlike LSD or PCP, however, salvia's effects last for a shorter time, generally a few minutes to up to an hour.
While the videos have become a type of badge of honor for kids, they've also proved useful for state legislators when arguing to make the herb illegal to sell of possess.
Lynne C. Nowick, a Suffolk County legislator who sponsored a bill to ban salvia in Suffolk County, NY, showed her colleagues two videos posted on YouTube.
The bill passed 17 to 0.
One death has been associated with SD; a 17-year-old Delaware high school student who committed suicide in 2006 after smoking the herb.

These videos make me so angry
Many of them contain direct misinformation like "Legal form of marijuana" or "Smokable Acid!"
I want to strike back like Jay & Silent Bob on these kids, Movie Poopshoot style.

This shit is ridiculous. Why is youtube allowed to post videos of underage kids taking illegal drugs (even if its not banned in the state, intoxication on anything but alcohol is nationally illegal!)? I'm going to write a letter to these pigfuckers to ban these videos; hopefuly that would help to slow the progress of salvia being banned nationally.

Ummm... if YouTube bans Salvia videos, the headline from Wired tomorrow will be "YouTube Bans Dangerous Teen Drug Videos." The politicians will use this to add fuel to their fire. They'll say "Even the anarchistic internet is banning it! We must stop this menace! Save the children!" The videos should have never been made, but banning them will *not* help the cause.
