A father got caught red-handed with illegal drugs after police could smell cannabis in the street. James Bailey, 34, of Strand Meadow, Burwash, near Etchingham, was with another man in Hastings when he was caught.
Prosecutor Chris Bull said: "Officers were on foot patrol in Hastings late in the evening when they could smell cannabis in the air so they approached this defendant.
"He attempted to run and was chased and detained.
"Police searched him and in his pockets were what was believed to be LSD tablets.
"The defendant was taken to the police station and a full search was carried out."
Hastings magistrates heard officers found 19 blue tablets and 20 other tablets in Bailey's possession.
Police also searched his house and found 30 grammes worth of magic mushrooms.
It was later revealed that the 19 blue tablets were Ecstasy and the other drugs were legitimate ones.
Bailey told police he found the mushrooms growing in a field behind his house.
He pleaded guilty to three drugs possession offences when he appeared before Hastings magistrates in court on Monday.
Kim Goodall, defending, said: "The defendant disputes running off from the police.
"He was running to catch up with a child who was on a scooter.
"The defendant co-operated fully with the police and pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity."
Magistrates adjourned the case until March 25 so pre-sentence reports could be drawn up.

Well it can only be assumed that since he's a father and he was in possession of drugs that he was giving his own child drugs and therefore is a threat to society.

UPDATE
A Burwash father, who was caught red-handed with illegal drugs, has been ordered to do community service. James Bailey, 34, of Strand Meadow, appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court on Tuesday for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to possessing Ecstasy, LSD and magic mushrooms.
At an earlier hearing, magistrates were told how Bailey was with another man in Hastings on February 22 when police approached him after smelling cannabis in the air.
Bailey ran, but was caught by the officers, who searched him and found LSD tablets in his pockets.
He was taken back to the police station and a full search was carried out.
Nineteen Ecstasy tablets and 20 other tablets, later found to be legitimate ones, were found in Bailey's possession.
Police also searched his house and found 30 grammes of magic mushrooms, which Bailey said he had found growing in a field behind his home.
Bailey p reviously refuted that he had run away from police and claimed he was running to catch up with a child on a scooter.
Bailey, who has previous drug-related convictions, pleaded guilty when he first appeared before Hastings magistrates court on March 3.
The case was adjourned until Tuesday for pre-sentence reports to be drawn up.
Magistrates told Bailey he would receive a reduction in his sentence because of his early guilty plea.
Bailey was to receive a curfew as part of his sentence, but this was challenged by his solicitor.
Kim Goodall, defending, said: "He's a one parent family, struggling to cope financially and bringing up a four year old, and he believes a curfew will cause difficulty in his home life."
Magistrates agreed and Bailey was sentenced to a 12 month community punishment and ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work.
He was ordered to pay £50 court costs.
