An Amaranth home was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning, revealing a marijuana growing operation inside. The homeowners have since turned themselves in to police; they face a collective four charges.
Fire broke out at the Eighth Line residence shortly after 5 a.m.; it was discovered by one of the homeowners who returned home at that time, say Dufferin OPP. No one was inside the residence when the blaze began.
In the course of their duties, firefighters discovered a marijuana grow operation in the basement and related items in the garage.
"We haven't been able to get in the house at this point," Det. Mark Taylor said Wednesday, when asked how elaborate the growing operation was. "The Fire Marshal's office has rendered it unsafe [to enter]. We're just doing some work today, getting walls pulled down and the roof lifted off so we can get in and have a look."
It took most of Sunday to fully extinguish the fire, says Grand Valley Fire Chief David Stevenson. He declined to comment further, as the matter has been handed over to police.
"It went up pretty quick," an area resident told The Banner.
"The front living room and the roof just went up in flames," another recalled. "They have the front bay window ... and that was just orange flames and you could tell the roof was all up in flames."
Only a small section of roof remains at the north end of the residence, the rest collapsed.
"We don't know that it's the grow [that started the fire]," Taylor notes. "That's to be determined."
The scene was blocked off through Monday, as firefighters and police reviewed the property with a representative of the Ontario Fire Marshal's office. Yellow caution tape was put up around the site and police took down the names of those who stopped by. Several drivers slowed to take a look at the goings on as they passed.
At least two children, possibly three, lived inside the home -- the eldest is in Grade 2, a nearby resident told The Banner.
"They didn't want anyone to know them.... They didn't want to get to know anyone," one person said, adding the homeowners had lived there for six or seven years. "I don't know about anything that's going on over there."
"They really kept to themselves," agreed another resident of the area. "The only thing I would see is his truck going by."
The children moved out of the house a few months ago, Taylor said, noting only one person was living there at the time of the fire.
Two people turned themselves in Tuesday at the Dufferin OPP detachment in Shelburne.
Joao Paulo Saraiva, 42, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, production of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Jie F He, 37, is charged with production of a controlled substance.
