CHENG Kok Khuan, 55, has successfully kicked his drug habit and stayed clean for the past 21 years.

For his perseverance, Cheng and 10 other former drug addicts were awarded the Lifetime Recovery gold medal at an a wards presentation ceremony organised by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) in Bangi, Selangor, recently.

The medal is awarded to those who managed to avoid the drug habit for more than 20 years.

Cheng, from Taiping, started smoking cannabis (ganja) when he was 16, and his parents found out about it three years later.

In his 18 years as an addict, he had spent RM650,000 on drugs -- RM100 a day on cannabis, LSD, Roche 2 and heroin.
To feed his addiction, he stole, extorted people and pushed drugs.

But everything came to a halt in 1986 when he was arrested.

"I was lucky because there were no drugs on me. I felt as if God had given me a second chance.

"At the same time, a friend who was running a drug rehabilitation centre asked me to admit myself and I did," said Cheng who "graduated" from Agape Home in 1992 and has not looked back since.

He is now in charge of the same centre which cured him of his addiction.

Another award winner, Fadila Samad, 48, has been staying clean for the past 10 years, earning her a bronze medal, the only female winner in the category.

The mother of four from Banting, Selangor, said she managed to kick the habit after two years during her teens but her problem recurred. Just months after staying clean, at the age of 19, she married a drug addict.

Fadila admitted that while she succeeded in staying away from drugs, her husband was still struggling to kick the habit.

"I am thankful that none of my children take drugs and they accept me as I am," said Fadila who stopped taking drugs in 1996 when she got a job as a security guard.

Fadila and Cheng were among some 300 recovered addicts who were present at the awards presentation ceremony co-organised by AADK alumni Pendamai and Pengasih.

They received their symbol of recognition for staying clean for two to 28 years from Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum.
