LA GRANGE, Ky. -- A central Kentucky police officer was charged with growing marijuana and has turned in his resignation, the department said.
Oldham County Officer Gerald W. Colston was arraigned Tuesday in Oldham County District Court and released on his own recognizance.
Colston, the department's only canine officer, turned in his resignation on Friday after Police Chief Michael Griffin requested it.
"This alleged misconduct is a disappointment to me and the other 29 officers in the Oldham County Police Department," Griffin told The Courier-Journal. "This is a very, very difficult time for all of us."
Kentucky State Police said Colston had grown four marijuana plants at rental property where he lived.

They don't need to. I'm sure the evidence room is filled to the brim with all kinds of goodies.

OH GOD WHAT A TRAVESTY!!! He had not one, but FOUR MARIJUANA PLANTS! What a disappointment to society as a whole. Anyone who is growing pot plants must be a no good low-life right?? I mean he did such a good job protecting the streets until they had to find his plants. If you don't think his resignation is justified.. then just consider how much danger could have resulted from those 4 plants on the street. DAYUMN!
Wait how come they didn't involve some remarkably high street price for his goods? I mean they do that every time they make a sweet ass bust on some regular joe. They have to gloat about how fucking bad it would have been for the kids on the street, and oh don't forget all the violent crimes that involve marijuana. The world is going to lose it, and it's all marijuanas fault!
It's truly ridiculous that pot is even ostracized by society and the fucking law. Can't they just pleeaaaase get a fucking clue? Seriously, what is the fucking deal.. how can we get this shit legal once and for all? If alcohol is legal, fucking pot should be too! It grows from the god damn ground!

I think it depends upon the area... Most of the cops that I have met are decent people doing a job. However, there are certainly a fair number that meet your description as well. Every occupation has bad apples, but I think the police end up with more than their fair share for some reason.
One of my friends recently married a new york cop. They got married down here and I had the opportunity to speak with him and his cop friends that came down for the wedding. The trend that I noticed is they all start out with good hearts, wanting to help society. However, after a few years of the same old shit, they start to become disillusioned about their job and take their frustrations out on the rest of us. The theme I kept hearing over and over was "lack of respect" towards police. A few examples:
"I see a guy light a crack pipe right in front of me. I ask him about it, and he tells me that I am seeing things. Why couldn't the guy have waited two minutes until I was out of sight?"
or
"I see a guy beating a woman in the street. I stop to break up the fight, and the next thing I know, both the woman and man are attacking me, along with their friends and family."
When they deal with this kind of stuff, and worse, day after day, I think it starts to rub off on them. They loose the feeling that they are somehow helping society and instead turn into one of those that they are supposed to be protecting society from. Personally, I blame the politicians that create the stupid laws in the first place.
One last bit, I asked each of them which they would rather deal with, a drunk or a pot head. Every last one (about seven or eight) would rather get called to a pot head problem than a drunk problem. To these few cops (all from new york), alcohol was a much larger problem than cannabis. (They actually laughed at the idea of a pothead causing problems that would require police...)
