    #6727534 - 03/30/07 09:55 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

I just saw a thing on FOX NEW about a posible salvia ban. I am not sure which state, but I would suggest getting your clones NOW.

I don't have time right now, but someone please post a link from FOX NEWS.

Senator Estes files bill to regulate Salvia Divinorum

Austin - State Senator Craig Estes filed Senate Bill 1796 to restrict access to the psychoactive drug Salvia Divinorum commonly available in tobacco shops or over the Internet.

"Many people are not aware of this growing problem with Salvia, and we are not sure of the long term affects from using this drug," said Estes. "At the very least, drugs that alter the mind of the user should not be available to minors."

Senate Bill 1796 would prohibit the sale or giving of Salvia Divinorum to anyone under the age of 18. Salvia a psychoactive plant that can be ingested by chewing the plants, or squeezing the leaves for juice, but is most commonly ingested by drying and smoking the leaves.

Websites promoting the use of Salvia encourage the user to have a "sober sitter" to watch out for the user's safety while under the effects of the drug. The effects of the drug often leave the user temporarily incapacitated and unable to function without supervision.

"I can see no reason to allow a minor to have access to any substance that requires a 'sober sitter' to keep the user from hurting themselves or others," said Estes.

Estes added that he believes the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services should conduct an interim study to further investigate the use of Salvia Divinorum and to recommend whether further regulation is warranted.

And what, may I ask you, is so wrong with the proposal in Texas? What they are doing is exactly what every other state should be doing: regulating it for adult (18+) use instead of banning it outright.

Next time do a little research and maybe bring us an actual article before just posting some scared little comment about a blurb you saw on Fox News.

Exactly DNKYD.

I think it's quite unlikely that any state that passes restrictions prohibiting the sale to minors will later go back and schedule the substance.

If we want to keep salvia legal, we should be encouraging laws like being considered in Texas.

Because much of the motivation and justification for the outright bans is the "keep children safe" or some other BS. If it is already unavailable to minors, they have to convince everybody that it is a danger and a threat. If it's already against the law to give to minors, it's just not worth worrying about.

Actually, last I checked, a man in the Texas House of Representatives named Charles Anderson authored House Bill 2347 to schedule Salvia Divinorum and Salvorin A as a Penalty Group 2 of the Texas Controlled Substances Act. It is currently being reviewed. So no, Texas isn't thinking about banning sales to minors, they're trying to ban it outright. If it passes, it will come into effect September 1, 2007.
