Hash factory behind Scugog home explosion January 19, 2007 - durhamregion.com
Three men are in custody and police are seeking a fourth person in connection with a series of explosions on Thursday that levelled a Coates Road home that police allege housed a clandestine drug lab.
According to Durham police, the explosions which rocked the home located at 1780 Coates Road East, just south of Port Perry near the Purple Woods Conservation Area, were caused by flammable substances being used by a small group of men producing cannabis resin.
In the area of the home at the time of the explosions and subsequent fire were four men, two females and a baby, say police.
The blasts which ignited the blaze, says Detective-Sergeant Herb Curwain of the North Durham Community Police Office, were likely caused by materials used by the men to create the illicit substance.
"We believe it was due to the accelerants being used to make the cannabis resin. The chemical we believe they were using kind of exploded," he said.
Typical chemicals used in such production include butane and gasoline antifreeze, he added.
"There are highly flammable chemicals used in the process and they run the risk of explosions or fire," said Det.-Sgt. Curwain.
Those inside the home at the time of the explosion are "absolutely... very lucky" to have escaped without serious injury, he added.
Authorities do not believe the lab was a long-term operation, noting they suspect it had only been up and running "just the last week or so," said Det.-Sgt. Curwain.
They will, however, be combing the area for further clues on Friday when they execute a search warrant on the premises, he added.
The home and several vehicles were destroyed in the ensuing fire. Damage estimates are pegged at about $1 million.
Police have secured the property and their investigation, in conjunction with officials from the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office, is expected to continue through the weekend.
Det.-Sgt. Curwain notes that authorities uncover such operations "from time to time, they can be in any community" and says some people just aren't getting the message about the hazards associated with drugs.
"This just shows the danger. We've been trying to express the... dangers in drug production (through the media) but we've seen a significant increase in hydroponic labs and grow ops in fields," he said.
When you're mixing chemicals to create illicit substances, he adds, "sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you're not. I'd characterize these guys as lucky because they're still alive, but they'll be before the courts."
Charged in connection with the fire and drug lab are Derek Kilpatrick, 31, of Coates Road; Darran Moore, 33, of Verna Drive in Little Britain; and Jeffrey Harrison, 25, of Phyliss Avenue in Toronto.
They each face charges of production of cannabis resin, possession for the purpose of trafficking cannabis resin, possession for the purpose of trafficking marijuana and arson (disregard for human life).
A warrant has also been issued for Michael Abdulkhalek, 32, of Bobcaygeon.

They act like making hash oil is some chemistry experiment. Mixing chemicals my ass.

This is fucking dumb, how could they charge them with intent to distribute? Fuck, who knows if they were going to distribute, they couldve just been making hash for themselves.

Saying wood alcohol wouldn't have the shock value of "gasoline antifreeze". Like saying "A woman died from overdose of dihydrogen monoxide, the primary chemical in almost all illicit drug synthesis. (aka she drank too much water).

back during alcohol prohibition, there used to be explosions and fires when someone would have an accident with an illicit still. that of course pretty much ended when prohibition did.
