Politicians caught out in TV drug test

SIXTEEN Italian politicians tested positive for cocaine or cannabis use in a trick drugs test carried out by a television satire show, the country's media reported today.
The show tested 50 parliamentarians by applying what appeared to be make-up to their faces, telling them they were to appear in a debate on the country's budget, the ANSA news agency reported in a story soon taken up by other media.
The make-up actually consisted of chemicals that could detect the presence of drugs in sweat on the participants' skin. It detected cocaine in four of the politicians and cannabis in 12. Both the drugs are banned in Italy.
The Hyena show - a well-known satirical series on a channel run by right-wing former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi - has a reputation for exposing the decadence of the political classes.
A member of the Green party who favours decriminalising drug use, Paolo Cento, reacted to the news by slamming what he called the "hypocrisy" of the political class which he said "votes for anti-liberty laws while sniffing cocaine".
The drug test is to be broadcast tomorrow. Director Matteo Viviani said the identities of those who had tested positive would not be revealed.

i like it
not that i know much about Italy's Parliament, i would think more than 16 of 50 would turn up positive.
Thats not majority odds, so i don't see how the claims of hypocrisy really hold water? even if the 16 drug using members wanted to legalize pot and coke, could the other 78% keep the illegality?
(note, i have no clue how Italian government is run)

It would probably suck in the US. No one would test positive for pot, and although you might find cocaine, I don't think that would be the drug of choice either.
On the other hand, if you tested for valium, oxycodone, etc. that would show up by the bucket load. Of course everyone would be waving their prescription...

What makes you so sure that US politicians would not test positive for pot?

Bill Clinton anyone?
Oh, that's right our politicians smoke pot, they just don't inhale!
Maybe in Italy the politicians just smell the cocaine. They just sniff it, but don't actually snort it.
