Ecstasy lab taken down on Mt. Woodside

An early morning police raid on a Mt. Woodside residence last Saturday has taken down one of the largest Ecstasy labs ever uncovered in the eastern Fraser Valley.
Police members from two specialized units removed 167 grams of Ecstasy and enough chemical ingredients to manufacture another 25 kilograms of the drug, according to RCMP Cst. Steve Hiscoe.
"I don't know if it was destined for the local streets ... or elsewhere, but any time we have a seizure of this size, with enough products to make a very substantial amount, it will make an impact on what we see locally," Cst. Hiscoe said.
Two men, aged 34 and 40, were arrested at the lab, which was contained inside a detached garage/workshop at 2285 Lougheed Hwy. The older suspect, a U.S. citizen, was also wanted on a Canada-wide immigration warrant.
Cst. Hiscoe said the suspects, wearing gas masks and rubber gloves, began dumping out and smashing containers of chemicals inside the building after police arrived at 1:24 a.m. and announced their presence.
Thick, toxic smoke filled the tiny structure as a result of the chemical interaction, but the suspects refused to surrender.
Police managed to open the workshop's overhead garage door to disperse the smoke and members, donned in protective gear, had to physically remove the two men to a safe area where they were taken into custody.
Investigators also recovered a loaded 9mm handgun from the scene. Hiscoe said the older suspect was wearing the gun's holster and may have discarded the weapon when police arrived.
The search warrant was executed by members of the Chilliwack RCMP Street Enforcement Unit along with members of the "E" Division Clandestine Laboratory Team.
The 34 year-old suspect has been charged with drug production and possession for the purpose of trafficking, as well as obstruction. The 40 year-old suspect faces similar drug charges, in addition to resisting arrest and possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.
Ecstasy (or MDMA), is a popular 'club' drug often associated with raves. It is generally taken in pill form and produces both stimulant and psychedelic effects.
The stimulant effects, which enable users to dance for extended periods, may also lead to dehydration, hypertension and heart or kidney failure. It may also lead to heat attacks, strokes and seizures in some users.
In high doses, Ecstasy can cause an increase in body temperature leading to muscle breakdown and kidney and cardiovascular system failure reported in some fatal cases, according to one anti-drug web site.
The arrests were the result of several months of investigation, according to Cst. Hiscoe. Police were monitoring the purchase of large quantities of chemicals and precursors that eventually led them to the Mt. Woodside property. He could not immediately comment on the suspects' connection to the address.
Many of the chemicals found in these labs are very corrosive or flammable. Vapours that evolve from chemical reactions attack the mucous membranes, skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract, he noted.
Some chemicals will react with water or other chemicals and cause fire or explosions, which puts neighbouring homes at risk.
