House blaze results in marijuana bust Firefighters call police after finding plants.
By SARA AGNEW of the Tribune?s staff Published Monday, November 7, 2005
Columbia firefighters responding yesterday afternoon to a west-central Columbia blaze thought it suspicious that the occupant kept trying to get back into the burning home.
John Hall, 41, of 209 Redwood Road was taken into custody after firefighters discovered the marijuana plants under growing lights throughout the house, said Battalion Chief Steve Sapp.
"It was quite a surprise for our people," Sapp said.
Troubles began for Hall at about 4 p.m. yesterday, when he left a cigarette burning in a utility room that eventually caught on fire.
When firefighters arrived, it was obvious there was something in the house Hall didn?t want them to find, Sapp said.
"He was acting real nervous," Sapp said. He tried a number of times to get back into the house when our guys were trying to put out the fire. We finally placed him with a police officer."
When firefighters came across the marijuana plants, Sapp said, the Columbia Police Department was contacted and a search warrant was issued for the home. Once inside, Columbia officers confiscated 170 grams of marijuana packaged for sale, $1,360 in cash, growing lights and numerous items of drug paraphernalia.
Hall was arrested on suspicion of one count of production of a controlled substance, one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bond had not been set as of this morning.
