Largest ever cannabis haul in London seized

Nearly six tonnes of cannabis - the largest ever haul in London - was seized today following an undercover operation by police and customs officers.
Nine people were arrested and the drugs - with a street value of ?12 million - were found following a raid involving more than 50 police and customs officers.
Scotland Yard said the massive stash - recovered at a port on the East Coast - had been imported from Mexico, hidden in a cargo of furniture and other artefacts.
Six men - aged 37, 52, 37, 43, 26 and 46 - plus two women, aged 31 and 42, were arrested early this morning at various locations across London. As part of the sting, police also arrested a seventh man, aged 43, in Essex.
The cannabis resin, weighing 5.6 tonnes, is the largest ever cannabis seizure made by police in London.
Met Det Supt Jim Dickie said: "This is the biggest load we have ever confiscated. There is no doubt it will have major implications on criminal activity in the city.
"We are talking about a top class organised criminal operation here. The logistics for bringing this amount of drugs into the country from Mexico are huge. We are certainly not talking about a small outfit.
"My main hope is that the seizure of this haul will have an effect on the market price. This in turn will have an effect on crime in London as there is no doubt that that is where all this heading."
He added: "Today?s intelligence-led operation is an excellent example of inter-agency co-operation to combat serious and organised crime, which has such a devastating impact on London?s communities.
"The Met and HM Customs have worked together in order to stop the flow of drugs into the UK and dismantle organised criminal networks that are involved in the supply in London."
Det Supt Dickie said the drugs would be destroyed after the court case and police would look to stop the gang making any money from previous deals.
He added: "We have already seized ?180,000 in cash and will freeze any other assets we find belonging to the suspects.
"I cannot say if this gang smuggled in any large quantities before, but they are a very organised lot."
He said the bust was the result of an intelligence-led operation that was months in the planning.
Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, the head of the Met?s Specialist Crime Directorate, said: "The Met is committed to working with our partner agencies to tackle the supply of drugs, including cannabis, in London.
"Undoubtedly, this large seizure of cannabis was destined for London and had the potential to create serious harm to our communities. I would like to congratulate the teams for the tremendous success they have had during this operation."
Assistant Chief Investigation Officer Graham Honey, of HM Revenue and Customs, said: "We are committed to reducing the availability of drugs and the associated harm in our communities. Customs and the Met are working together, using the very best modern techniques and tactics, and we are getting results.
"Today we have taken drugs worth ?12 million out of the supply chain before they have reached UK streets."

how come just about every large siezure of drugs is billed as the 'largest ever'?
"Authorities today found one pot seed frozen in antarctic ice. It is being hailed as the largest siezure ever on the icy continent"
