300 lbs. of cocaine seized, 10 arrested in smuggling sting September 2, 2005 - herald-sun.com
Police and federal agents arrested 10 people -- seven of them in Durham -- and seized nearly 300 pounds of cocaine as they cracked what they called a large-scale smuggling operation.
The operation, which extended from Mexico to the northeastern United States, used a car carrier tractor-trailer, with cocaine hidden in the cars. Besides 297 pounds of cocaine, authorities seized nine cars, the tractor-trailer, seven guns and $78,000 in cash.
The bust began to unfold Wednesday, when state troopers in Hayward County west of Asheville pulled over the car-carrier rig, driven by Ricardo Alonso Cencena-Valdevivar, 47, according to a news release by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Officers found 286 pounds of cocaine in the cars on the truck, they said.
Follow-up by the DEA's Asheville office and other agencies including the Durham Police Department and Orange County Sheriff's Department led to the arrests of two men in Orange County, Francisco Hernandez-Mendez, 45, and Jose Luis Ochoa-Figueroa, 47.
Also, agents and officers with a search warrant went to a house at 7819 Fayetteville Road in Durham, where they found 11 more pounds of cocaine, the DEA said, along with the money and guns.
The seven people arrested at the Fayetteville Road house were: Ramiro Esquivel Rojas, 53; Zeferino Sanchez Ambriz, 35; Jose Luis Rangel Torrez, 39; Isidoro Garcia Sanchez, 31; Atanacio Mesa Mesa, 38; Jacinto Lopez Barrera, 23; and Celestino Ambriz Torres, 41.
