INDIANAPOLIS -- A drug seizure that authorities described Friday as one of the largest ever in central Indiana yielded 45 kilograms of pure cocaine valued at $4.5 million and the arrests of three Indiana men.
Most of the confiscated cocaine -- 42 bricks weighing about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) each -- was recovered from two suitcases in the trunk of a car that was followed Thursday from an Indianapolis home that a task force of FBI agents and local police officers had under surveillance. Task force officers found the remaining 3 kilograms inside the home.
The car likely was transporting the 42 kilograms to another large city such as Cincinnati or Detroit, authorities said at a news conference that brought together federal and local law enforcement leaders.
"We don't know the final resting place for the cocaine," said Keith L. Lourdeau, special agent in charge of the Indianapolis Division of the FBI.
Dwayne Bowen, 43, and William E. Thomas, 38, both believed to be from Lake County, were charged with one federal count each of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute. Authorities did not release their hometowns but said each was driving vehicles registered in Merrillville.
Anthony Howard, 29, of Indianapolis, the resident of the home that was raided, was arrested on the same charges and an additional federal count of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.
Thomas and Howard were being held Friday at the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis pending a detention hearing Wednesday. Bowen was due to be returned to federal custody.
