Police in magic mushroom raid Jul 9 2004 By Mark Cowan
SCORES of magic mushrooms seized in police raids on three shops have been sent for forensic analysis.
The raids came five months after the Evening Mail highlighted concerns of residents in Selly Oak who feared that the shops selling them would only lure more youngsters into drugs.
Four men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of possessing with intent to supply Class A drugs and offering to sell Class A drugs.
They were all released on bail pending further inquiries. The mushrooms contain the hallucinogens psilocin and psilocybin, which are both Class A drugs.
But the Home Office has ruled it is not illegal to sell the mushrooms in their fresh state. They are only outlawed if sold dried or frozen.
Det Chief Insp Steve Anderson said officers had taken legal advice before mounting the raids.
