Three Pounds Of Marijuana Found

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Because of a broken taillight, a Petaluma man has been jailed, minus a large quantity of marijuana.
A highway patrol officer pulled Gary Swett over Wednesday near Santa Cruz to point out that a taillight on his truck was broken. Sonoma County Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Bertoli says the officer noticed a strong smell of marijuana and searched the truck.
The officer arrested Swett after finding a hidden compartment holding three pounds of pot.
A search of Swett's home provided more evidence in the form of 61 plants, which could have yielded about six more pounds of the illegal weed, according to authorities.
Officials say that three guns, hallucinogenic mushrooms and packaging material were also seized.
And that wasn't the end. Information found in the home led officers to a Santa Rosa business park, where investigators say they found another 298 plants and another pound of pot.
Swett was booked for investigation of cultivating marijuana, being a felon with a gun and possession of the mushrooms.

One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.
