    #8843906 - 08/28/08 08:15 PM (3 months, 3 days ago)

This was found in mixed woods(predominantly pines) below a pine tree...had a few white specs on cap..no cup like base, no bruising, whitish gills, these pics are of the same mushroom..i kinda kept an eye on it til it opened up

Nice work, dickenz.

Are you sure about the ID?

http://njcc.com/~ret/amanita/species/parcivol.html

I do not see the strong striations on the cap.

Amanitas kill more people than all other mushrooms put together, so an ID of some to be eaten must be correct. An ID based on a photo on the Internets is not reliable enough to potentially risk your life on. ToxicMan

Oh.  Well, my time is up at the library.  The librarian is giving me dirty looks and pointing at the clock.

Maybe someone else will help.

Actually, the more i think about it and research it..since it had white patches on the top it rules out the false caesar which has yellow patches..since it doesnt have a sac-like cup at the base of the stalk..Im starting to think of a variation of A. muscaria. Would that be completely wrong?

Looks a lot like Amanita flavoconia,it doesn't have the rings on the base of the stem as muscaria does.

as i said above it had white patches..the nickname of flavoconia is "yellow patches"  of course those white things on the cap could be just debris..in all fairness you could be right..i guess i need to find more and look into it..thanx for the input guys

Well, with if it has white patches it can't be flavoconia.

Did you ever figure out what they are?  I was going to try and key it out but I didn't have time.  One thing I would have wanted was a better picture of the base of the stem.
