My Dog Ate Green Gills
    #8805834 - 08/21/08 01:32 PM (3 months, 10 days ago)

I have an 80lb Black Lab that LOVES mushrooms. He will hunt out all of the Pan Foes and gobble them up. Yesterday I went out in the yard and saw him bent over something white. I went over to see what it was and saw him gulp down a large mushroom cap. I picked up the stem and saw the pink staining and figured it was a green gills. I looked around and found another half a cap and sure enough that's what it was. This dog RAN over and tried his best to get the other piece. I believe he ate almost two whole Chlorophylum Molybdites. Of course I got on the shroomery and ran a search for dogs and green gills. I came to the conclusion that it was best to just watch him.
Well, I don't think the damn things bothered him at all.
I did not see him puke once and I brought him inside to keep an eye on him. He seemed fine all night and this morning as well.

So, either green gills don't affect dogs or some must be immune to them .

This dog is mushroom CRAZY.

Good to know!  I wonder if all dogs can tolerate them.  Good chance...Some people eat them as food and have no problems, but they are in the minority.

Yeah, I used to worry about him eating a bad mushroom. But maybe I should just let him eat what he wants.

I have noticed he doesn't eat the Agrocybe Pediades.

Maybe they don't smell as yummy.

Green gills do smell very nice and mushroomy.

Perhaps dogs have some kind of crazy sixth mushrooms sence that allows them to destinguish between something that may kill them and something that wont. Ive always been kinda interesting in training a dog to sniff out cubensis and meanies. I figure if pigs can do it with truffles why not dogs? As far as i know theyre sence of smell is pretty close of the scale of....smellingness??? or smellablilty.

No problem training him to sniff them out. But keeping him from eating them would be the clever bit.

Once I almost lost a big haul of pan subbs to him. I layed them on the pik nik table and walked away. Beat him by a split second.

what kind of dog is it?

There was a news report some time back about a small epidemic of dogs from wealthy families that acquired a taste for mushrooms and died after eating (suspected) Amanitas in the wild; evidently the species in most mushroom-related illnesses of dogs are unknown.

Here's a 2006 mushroom toxicity report that includes statistics on dog poisonings: Beug 2006
