Trumpet of DEATH!

Today I picked 5 oz. of Craterellus cornucopioides.

I normally dry and grind these into powder for flavoring. This time I think I will make some stuffing with them using wild rice.
Trumpet of death is one name, but I see chefs are calling them the Black Trumpet. Works for me.
These were growing on a mossy bank mycorrhizal with Northern Red Oak at the 41 latitude.

I think the French gave them that name--La Trompette des morts. I don't know why.

Wow, great find! I've been hoping to find them for several years -- still looking. I need someone to point them out... to learn me.

I always thought it was because of the color. Mr. Hongos, may I ask which state you are located in? Im wondering if my Trupet/chantrelle spot here in nj is up and running. Ive been finding some smooth chants at my summer job ( i keep meaning to bring a camera, the place is heaven...the mycodiversitey is amazing!)but my real spot is about an hour and a half away and i dont want to waste the gas by going prematurely.

I read some research that they might be saprophytic or perhaps partially mycorhizzal like morels. Also genetic testing has shown they do not belong in the same family as Chanties.
