Subbsperimenting
    #8569394 - 06/26/08 11:36 PM (5 months, 3 days ago)

This is pretty simple, but what I did was break up some manure colonized with subbalteatus mycelium, and mixed it in with some fairly fresh, uncolonized looking substrate from the subb's manure pile.  This was left in a small tupperware for about a week.  I added a little bit of water every few days.  Upon seeing pins I started misting.  They've been growing kind of slowly, I think due to poor air exchange.  My ultimate goal is to get a decent sized pile going in the yard by slowly expanding it, so it doesn't get too contaminated.

Most recent finds, from a couple weeks ago:

Some Panaeolus sphinctrinus/papillionaceus:

Unknown Panaeolus:

Bolbitius sp.:

A subby day (we didn't eat all of these):

Peace!

Weilii, maybe try adding more substrate for the subbs to colonize.  I think the more colonized substrate the better the potential for big flushes.

Phish, I'm in Montana.  Those pictures were taken at Willow creek.  All the rivers around here are blown out with snowmelt right now, except for some of the smaller creeks which flow through reservoirs, like Willow creek.

I got a ton i mean a ton of poo mixed with hay and stable shavings. I put the poo in a large trash bag then added the hay and shavings added water so the hay would absorb the poo water and then laid it out.

Shit, it'll probably just take some time then for the pile to get well colonized.  I bet if you take good care of it, you'll get some good flushes soon.  Were you seening good flushes off of the pile you took the poo from?

Yep, great thread, I'm about to start something like this myself...

i was going to toss up the soil real good first, like up to a foot deep. it just seems like all the soil i find em in is not hardpacked, so ill give it a shot.

im doing half with poo/hay (still waitin on the H-poo though) and another half with a fresh peice of sod, with manure underneath.

im going to do it comepletly outside. it also crossed my mind to throw in some bloodmeal for N content, but i dunno... might be mostly a cube thing...

how much light are you guys gettin in your patches?

Implee and Fliped, Thanks.

AgentC, sounds good.  What do you mean by tossing up the soil first?  I think the easiest thing to do is use a substrate that you've seen subbs flush directly off of, bring some colonized with subb mycelium and some uncolonized home, mix them together, and build it up over time, so other species have a smaller chance of taking over the uncolonized parts.  Bloodmeal is probably unnecessary, as you're creating a pretty natural habitat.  As for light, shade is probably your best bet.  How are you innoculating?

You should use stem butts.  You don't need total shade, but some shade is nice.
