Todays Finds
    #8399124 - 05/13/08 11:03 PM (3 months, 24 days ago)

First morels of the year, woop woooop! Plus lots of other interesting stuff. I went out to a slightly warmer, drier part of the valley hoping for some cool stuff and voila...

Mycorrhizally magnificent Inocybe dulcamara

An interesting Panaeolus mushroom growing in morel habitat. I thought Psathyrella at first, but the black mottled gills and stem led me toward Panaeolus.

Psathyrella sp.

Not sure, maybe Omphalinoid.

Pleurotus ostreatus

Yellow morels

Hunting grounds

Maybe an old Omphalina pyxidata

Looks kind of like Psathyrella to me. They can also have aequihymeniiferous gills.

Here is a pic of mt. shasta that I took this weekend:

Yeah, probably is Psathyrella. Thanks A Rock. I've gotta show you this really cool list of fungi that's been found above timberline in Montana. A black morel above 12,000 feet! Incoybe calamistrata growing with dwarf willow, above tree line. Very interesting stuff. Hopefully I can find it online. That's a very aquihymeniforous picture by the way.

Great pictorial landsnorkler! Though the season in Kansas is soon to be over, i found a couple pounds or so today and had cod and morel kabobs about an hour ago. the meal wasn't really all that memorable, however something really fun happened during meal prep. One of the mushrooms was a bit dirty so I rinsed it off in warm water. Thinking the warmth would accentuate the fragrance of the mushroom I put it to my nose and felt a sensation reminiscent of tiny bubbles from a carbonated beverage hitting my face. So i held the mushroom up in front of light bulb and watched as a cloud of millions of spores shot out.... you should try it! It's really awesome!

I miss Mt. Shasta. I used to live in Dunsmuir. I have a cousin who lives in Redding as well. Shit, I just miss Cali period. Good ole nevada county baby. Now I'm stuck in a shit hole called NY. It is pretty up here though.
