Corn cob mushrooms... weird.

I found a couple of mushrooms that looked nothing like any Ive ever seen, online or otherwise. They looked exactly like dark brown ears of corn.

They were sprouting in North Florida in mulch with a roughly five inch height and one inch diameter. They seriously looked like a brown corn cob that one would cook in a pot of water. I obviously did not pick any of these, but was just wondering if anyone has seen anything of this sort.

It's called "cornsmut" Ustilago maydis. I've seen it before due to the fact I've picked a fair share of corn in my day. It makes the kernels turn into mutant elongated bluish things. It's edible when its young before the kernels fill with black spores but I wouldn't eat it. If I see some next year I will take some pictures.
