Panaeolus subbalteatus expands to convex while P. papilionaceous stays more bell shaped and is a smaller mushroom. P. papilionaceous has appendiculate veil remnants that form a tooth like serrated edge around the cap margin and P. subbalteatus lacks these.
Also P. papilionaceous tends to grow directly from dung while P. subbalteatus can grow from grass or manure piles and does not always fruit right from the dung.

okay are panaeolus papilionaceous even active ? i read workman said " There is a very small possibility of being weakly active. Try looking at the stem base of several specimens for even the slightest hint of bluing. If you find one, dry and save it for later examination. I'd love to see a proven active strain of this species." what the hell did subbs get to new Yorks border and just decide to stop. you can get them in almost every state around it but you cant find them here. so basically I'm just looking for smaller subbs that have little white teeth looking things hanging off the cap where the veil was.

Many people find subbs in new york, check the search engine. Gary Lincoff found active Gyms in central park.
I don't think you should be looking for P. papilionaceous, but if you find there is no harm in trying them. Probably inactive though.

What is the URL of the list at the shroomery that you are using?
Looks like they have an outdated one around somewhere, the updated one is here. I removed all references to Panaeolus papilionaceous except the one in maine and noted there that the activity was doubtful.
