Latest Hike-Hunt
    #8592949 - 07/03/08 08:23 PM (4 months, 27 days ago)

I finally uploaded my pics from last weeks hike, hope you enjoy! I apologize for the poor image quality, I'm saving up for a new camera.

The first flush of the day

An old shelf

Growing out of a tree trunk

Dead Tree

Weird Brown Mushroom with really crowded gills, never seen one of these before

These little guys were EVERYWHERE. Some brown, some white, some red, but literally hundreds of them

Orange mushroom with yellow band around edge of cap, found in a drainage trench

A few more flushes on wood

A little friend

One birch log was covered in these striped shelves

These looked like a face to me, just thought it was kinda funny

These were interesting, one clustered flush, almost in a ring. Orangey cap, white sturdy stem, very close gills that didnt produce a print for me.

My first break was taken at the lower falls, which is about 40 ft tall.

Then the hiking turns into scrambling and climbing, making it much harder to hunt.

I found a large log with clusters of old decaying reishi, and with enough snooping around I found a live one

Another shelf with colored bands

I found a small flush of some interesting ringed cup fungi

Near the very top I saw some oysterlike mushrooms on a birch log, but I have never tried to id oysters yet

And finally I made it to the upper waterfall. This one is about 60 ft tall, and has a looooooong series of cascades below it.

View down the valley I had just climed

Here is all the lichen growing on the rocks around the waterfall

It took me 2 hours to wander my way up to the top, and then I ran down the whole thing in less than 20 minutes, with a few slips and slides along the way. I think the hike is about 1.3 miles and over 900 ft vert, and is one of my favorite places to collect my thoughts and explore the lower mountains.

Your "wierd brown mushroom with really close gills" looks like a Fawn mushroom to me Pluteus cervinus imo but the gill color doesnt really match.

You have some Hygrocybe and Mycena in there, and check the stems of the clustered ones on wood to see if they are Flammulima.
