I came across this article from the Salt Lake Tribune that I found interesing. I wasn't sure where to put it but I thought some of you in ethno might get a kick out of it. I love stevia. I no longer use any sugar sweeteners at all. I use stevia exclusively. I once grew several plants from seeds I ordered on ebay. Anyone else grow this? It's an interesting herb and very very sweet ...

A leaf the Guarani Indians of Paraguay's jungles used to sweeten drinks for centuries may help Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. revive flagging sales in the $320 billion-a-year global soft-drink industry.
The Food and Drug Administration is poised to vote on allowing a zero-calorie sweetener derived from the stevia plant grown in Paraguay and China. Approval may allow the world's two largest soda makers to reverse three years of U.S. soft-drink sales declines, according to Mariann Montagne, an analyst at Minneapolis-based Thrivent Asset Management.
"They are really desperate for something to pick up colas," said Montagne, whose firm owns Coca-Cola and PepsiCo shares among the $70 billion it oversees. "There is definitely a need, and people will respond if they have this natural sweetener."
An stevia extract is already used in the U.S. in dietary tabletop sweeteners produced by Merisant and Cargill. The FDA only allows the stevia sweetener as a dietary supplement because it lacks evidence to declare it safe as a food ingredient.
Proponents say a new stevia extract, rebaudioside A, lacks the bitter aftertaste of older products using the leaf. The ingredient may be used in baked goods and chewing gum as well as soda, according to the FDA applications.
PepsiCo and Coca-Cola lost a quarter of their market value this year, falling about 8 percentage points more than the Standard & Poor's 500 Consumer Staples Index, as the world economy slowed.
Massimo D'Amore, chief of PepsiCo's beverage division, said on Nov. 20 that the company will use rebaudioside A as an alternative to higher-calorie or artificial sweeteners in some drinks as soon as the government gives "the green light."
Merisant Co., the closely held maker of Equal and Canderel artificial sweeteners, is working with New York-based PepsiCo to obtain FDA clearance for rebaudioside A, a compound that's at least 200 times sweeter than sugar. Cargill Inc., Atlanta-based Coca-Cola's partner, filed an application for the same compound about the same time in May.
The U.S. agency generally tries to complete such reviews in six months, spokesman Michael Herndon said, indicating a decision could come within days.

I like stevia as well, I'm surprised they would consider putting it in cola because of the expense. I've tried a lot of different brands of stevia and none wouldl be considered 200 times sweeter than sugar.
Artificial sweeteners are horrible for the body and I hope they get rid of equal and aspirtane containing products.

certainly good that they are looking for a better kind of sweetener, i just hope that they intend to grow it rather than rape it from nature if it is approved.

that's fucking HALARIOUS cause the FDA has banned it as a food additive for a while cause its "whatever". once coke/pepsi is interested watch it be passed. that is just f'ing pathetic 
but stevia sure is a nicer taste than sugar, leaves a very nice after taste as well...be a smart business move for them to use it in their drinks. i will find it painfully obvious how much the US gov is run by companies though, should thsi get passed. when its herbal lovers and hippies that use it, its not ok. when its coca cola using it it is A-OK....reminds me of coca.

i'm pretty sure the guarani tribes are from brazil though...
but they might extend their territory to paraguay..
i got a stevia plant last year, it's now flowering so i should get like thousands(lol, megalomaniac) of seeds to plant this year.
also i'm looking into bee-keeping so i can also use honey now ;D... bees are awesome..(but that's completely off topic huh...)

It is used widely in asia. I work for a company called bonnie plants we supply all the major retailers with herbs and veggie plants. We grew stevia this year but i wasnt impressed. If you ate a leaf it tasted like artificial sweetner kind of nasty. But growing the plant is the easy part if you actualy want to use it as a sugar substitute you need a lab to break down and isolate the "sweet" chemical the plant contains. If you tried to use the leaf you would have alot of plant matter in what ever you are makeing. I would suggest useing fruit sugars as a healthy alternative.

on their own not good, i agree. what they are really good for is enhancing the taste of other things. they do great in herbal teas. try a simple rose/mint tea with it.
you live in asia? there are some farms around here as well.

Did you guys ever wonder where do all the cocaine extracted from coca leaves (Coca cola has coca leaf extract-decocanized). Where does all that cocaine goes?

I grew stevia in botany last year. so far i took 2 cuttings. It doesn't grow so well where i'm at though.

I grew a small stevia plant last year, it tasted pretty damn good.

Just for clarification, it's Aspartame, which stands for Aspartate methyl ester. Basically it's a methoxylated amino acid. That's enough chemistry nerd for now!
