so my gf's moms bf is gonna let me borrow or have a 400 w metal halide for my cacti
how far away should this light be from my cacti?

edit: here how I have it as of now with a 14 / 10 light cycle

here's an HPS chart I believe mH get a little hotter, but maybe take a couple inches away if the cactus are old they're more heat/llight toleranct probably also

looks good to me, it will be fine at that distance for your grafts 
over time you could probably lower the light a bit but do it slowly so you dont fry your cacti...
the big cactus, whatever it is, will probably benefit from being a bit closer to the light but even with a 600w hps i found that larger cacti still etiolate.

i'd give it a week at that distance so they get used to the intensity of the light, then move it a bit closer and see what happens, trial and error is the only way to know for sure...
if you see any starting to turn red/purple then you will know it is too close so keep a close eye on them until you are happy with the setup.
and that's a hell of alot of electricity you are using to keep those guys happy over the winter lol...
i've kept perskiopsis grafts growing happily all winter in a sunny window.

this may sound stupid but in the 24 hours that light has been on them I see a diffence in them in a good way.
I cant wait to see what as little as 2 weeks will do
