I also put mine in soil to root. You just have to let the soil dry out a bit before wattering them. If you waterlog the soil you will get rot for sure.

If you have them in cups of water a drop or two of fish emulsion helps bring out the roots. It usually only takes a few days for roots to appear.

Stick them in dirt, when they're growing then you know they've rooted.

If you're having troubles I'd change up the environment it's in or put several around in different spots. They're generally very easy to root and will tolerate being waterlogged or dry.

Watch out if they are center cuts. if so you might wanna keep them in shade until used to sun. A few of mine are center cuts and I was rooting them in full sun and while they rooted well. Now the offsets they are forming are totally red and burnt. I had to move them to the shade.
I think before putting them in direct sun you need to let them become fully established. Then slowly acclimate them to the sun.
I don't have much experience with Pereskiopsis yet but so far this is what I've found true.

hot bright humid and moist....a surefire way to success I chop, stick, water and place in full sun. i honestly dont care much if they burn cause they grow so fast they recover well. full sun grown plants have super think stems/leaves as well!
if they rot in soil i am assuming they were too cold...just a guess.

Yeah full sun is best. Produces thick stemmed plants with bigger leaves. The areoles also grow closer together, meaning more leaves in a smaller area = increased photosynthetic capacity.

I had some and it took a while to root cuz they were dormant. Then it took a few weeks for the stems to thicken back up and to sprout little leaves.
