Blackening at the edges usually means it's been burnt.

Even a 3 gallon is probably to small. Mine are already getting rootbound. I might try and plant some in the ground. They like to spread their roots. If your gonna have to move them inside then at least gor for one of those 7 gallon big containers.

Being rootbound is not such a big issue as most people on this forum seem to make it out to be. Seeing as Salvia is a foliage plant, letting it get a little tight in the pot is no big deal. It will mean you have to be more diligent about watering. But it makes for a more compact and attractive plant as S. div is a bit leggy.
I'd say put it in a 3 gallon pot with a good peat based soilless mix, and pinch it. Get a good cutting from each of the terminal shoots, and watch that baby BUSH!
Oh, and fertilize with a lower concentration. Half strength or less if your already there.

Luckily I have been able to take many cuttings of both strains. I hope to plant a few in the ground since I'm in Zone 10 hopefully they will be OK over the winter. They seemed to be fine outside back in January. I just need to worry about the rain. I'll probably keep the initial parent plants in 3-7 gallon pots and keep as house plants.

I really don't see how your thread was hijacked? You posted pictures of plants in pretty good health with 1 question. Why are the edges blackening. I barely saw any signs of it except one spot on one leaf which means it has been burnt a little. No big problem. How many other ways could it be answered. You haven't asked any more questions and other people have. Would you rather your thread only answer questions from you regaurding Salvia? if so after the first question there would of been silence.
Your plant looks great Except one spot where it has been burnt. It's not from ferts or anything else. To much ferts will make the new growth look deformed. Other than that Repot the plant and put it in shade out of direct sunlight. In a couple months you'll have a nice sized plant with lots of cuttings if you like. But this has already been said. If you have any more questions please ask.
As for Salvia in Hawaii I believe that is a great environment for Salvia especially do to the Humidity. Just watch out for the rain. To much water will rot the roots quickly.

I didn't think you did. I'm just saying. We'd love to help in any other ways if possible. I'm by know means an expert grower, but If I can help in any other ways with my meager knowledge of growing I would love to. I've made many mistakes since I started growing and I'd like to help prevent you and others from repeating my mistakes. I'm sure Others feel the same way. Good luck.
By the way I had burnt tips far worse than yours when I first got my plants and may of lost a leaf or 2 but that it. Mine are doing wonderful. With lots of children to boot.
