Phalaris arundinacea?
    #8382699 - 05/09/08 06:21 PM (6 months, 20 days ago)

So I've been on the lookout for some Reed Canary Grass, Phalaris arundinacea, for a while now. Various grasses are now starting to put up their flowers/grains here in the PNW and so I went in my backyard (which hasn't been mowed since August) and spotted these. I took some pictures and compared to some photos and descriptions on various websites and it seems to fit the description. Here's a couple sites that helped me draw my conclusions:

http://dnr.metrokc.gov/wlr/waterres/smlakes/reed.htm
http://www.qc.ec.gc.ca/csl/inf/inf035_e.html

The first link mentions that an identifying feature is the common purpling of the flowers/grains, which there is definite purpling in the ones in these photos. There is the hazy grey/blue coloring on the leaves. They also have swollen nodes. The ones in my backyard are currently about 2ft tall and will likely get a bit bigger yet. My backyard is full of pretty heavy clay soil as well which keeps pretty moist.

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think.

Damn resized photos!

Grrr...I think this might just be Dactylis glomerata, Orchard Grass or Cocksfoot Grass: http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/assets/organicweeds/cocksfoot1.jpg

Well, one step closer to finding the real thing I guess. I know it's around...

There are non-striped versions of Phalaris arundinacea around too btw. There's a "picta" form that has those stripes that get sold as "Ribbon Grass" at nurseries apparently.

phalaris brachystachys is better still, not having nearly as much bufo and 5-meo, as well as having a much higher dmt content
