My cacti grafting grow log.
    #6647802 - 03/08/07 04:42 AM (1 year, 6 months ago)

Thought i would jump on the bandwagon and post some grow logs of my recently grafted cacti. now that i am in fact grafting cacti lol.

here are some lophophora on peresk. these peresk have been in the ground for 1 week, although this one had some roots. thanks bluedruid for the cuttings! i really couldn't wait so i had to do just one graft, the rest will wait. i used the top and bottom. root grafts always look so strange when starting out.

24/03/2007 UPDATE
Nice and burnt, oops. starting to grow and given some shade. strangely i did not protect the rot one and it is not burnt. it did shrivle some but has filled out since.?

28/3/2007 UPDATE
Here is a comparison of the graftee and a fellow seedling on its own roots. easily double. not so sunburned anymroe either...

21/4/2007 UPDATE
Now about 5 weeks (?) after it is about 1 cm wide. growing fast but now starting to slow down a bit.

This is a T. pachanoi grafted to an Opuntia sp. The damn thing was so full of juice even after i thought it dried it pushed it up. it looks attached to me though, just really crooked. the rings are lined up so i guess its ok. what are your thoughts. this opuntia is pretty fat for its size and has a nice 5" pot filled wth roots

24/3/2007 UPDATE
I didn't like the connection r the stock so i regrafted it...It took great and started to grow shown in these pics. i then bumped it a couple days later and broke it :frown: it is regrafted again and looks O-K...jsut really short.

21/4/2007 DEAD :frown:

NEW. Here is a pretty yellow T. pachanoi seedling. the pic doesn't show great but it is rather yellow. I am waiting fr my pereskiopsis to get growing some before i graft, probably next week.

21/4/2007 UPDATE the yellow pachanoi was grafted ok to pereskiopsis. i have now placed it outside is basically full sun. it has turned white with green tips and is now red or white with red tips. looks like a christmas pach.

these last ones i bought already grafted to H. undulatus. I have posted these before. they are giving out 8 and 4 flowers in teh last 1.5 months. and growing like mad. the bigger one has put out about 9 new areols that are clearly visible. the big one is 7cm accross and 5.5 cm high. the smaller one is 5.5 cm across and 5 cm high. i have moved the bigger one to a 6" pot, the smaller one is in a 4". hopefully the 6" will put out some good growth once the roots are huge!

24/3/2007 UPDATE
The bigger one has 8 flowers now, the smaller one has 11. 12 but 1 is very tiny still. can you see them all? They are both in 6" pots now and sending out even more flowers. 1-2 weeks after repotting the first one, she put out 4. still no fruits.

any other suggestions for graft stocks? i am in a bit of an experimenting mood as far as that goes. also like to try some areole grafts, never done those before.

Updates.

A new graft. This is my first areole graft. this is 2 month old areole grafted onto a fat juicy 4 ribbed hylocereus undulatus. it attatched no problem...but i am worried about tissues lining up. areoles have TINY rings!

those 2 loph grafts have grown quite alot! no need to consider regrafting those yet

and with all those flowers u should get some fruits. nice

a couple of weeks ago i grafted a williamsii and a diffusa onto the same branched pereskiopsis stock, to compare, i'll show it later

I've always had a question about root grafts. Without any arioles, where does the pup come from? The root?

ya. there is or was a post of here on the shroomery about it, 2 or 3 years ago i think...cant remember. by locus or lunatix or someone with an L. i will update with pics as it grows. i am a little worried about the areole RIGHT below the graft, didn't notice it at the time...

yes those grafts have grown a lot. to give an idea on the bigger one. where you see the out most flower, that areole was not developed and visible when i bought it! i am not planning on re-grafting it i was just repotting it. hylocereus apparently becomes a not so good stock when cacti are larger, but i think peyote stay small enough to be good for a long time. when the biggy stops growing (aside from winter) i will degraft however. would like to see it on its own roots one day. this is only when i have gotten enough seeds and it has slowed right down. no sense mucking with a good thing.

i would like to see that comparison, be very interesting! i was thinking of doing something along those lines as well in the future. the above loph/peresk graft with top and root are on the same plant as well.

Updates. We just had a huge sudden storm come in....very windy and VERY heavy rain...many of my plants are damaged but i think i covered the cacti in time. i will post updates once it passes (not going outside). The peyote on peresk is growing like stink...the root is unchanged.

bah, all areole grafts ad opuntia grafts have died, god damnit.

i just did another hylocereus pachanoi graft and the hylocereus has oozed and grown along all the cuts. really funky shit!!!

the variegated trich seems to be fixed n the pereskiopsis, but no growth. big colour changes.

here are a couple updates, sorry for the night pics, i cant sleep.

Variegated T. pachanoi. i almost lost this one. i dropped it into a sludgy goo of compost and a chunk broke off, i didnt notice it till the next say and it was rotting already. so i cleaned it and it lived, tough buggers.
pic of before i cut it and present. thankfully it was about 1 mm away from the center of the plant, just enough.

some variegated L. fricii from my bigger plant. actually these seedlings didn't look that bright at the beginning, but they have turned around. their brothers/sisters were far more bright.

one of my koereshii grafts started to rt in a very heavy rain, so i had to cut it....waiting a month for roots i decided to graft it. 8 cm and still taking grafts no problem.

3 cm diffusa

3 cm caespitosa. grafted for one month and is giving 2 pups already (not there before).

williamsii at 2 months of age, 1 cm.

another williamsii. the rootstock is 1 cm. sometimes i think i drink too much, but its all in good fun.

penis plant

i got a bunch more grafts and more on the way, but i cant hold the camera steady enough at night. take care all

here is the variegated T. pachanoi today.

a caespitosa pup i grafted last month, showing good growth.

1 of a few variegated fricii seedlings i was blessed with. my mother plant seems to have given me 6 or s variegated plants from seed, happy

a 2 month old fricii graft.

and finally the one i am really excited about. this fricci was from the same pod as my variegated ones, so i am hopeful!!! it is also at least a multiple headed one or if i am very lucky a crest. but i got no idea. with the amount things pup on a peresk graft, i think even if crest it will get all fucked up. time will tell.

Grea stuff there, kadakuda! I love the yellow pedro, glad it made it. I also love the idea of a 1 cm stock, as crazy as it seems I'll bet it works. Thanks for sharing, very inspiring.
p.s. did you write directly on the stock in the diffusa and koereshii pics?

Thanks  if you have very few few stocks and too many seedlings, 1cm root stocks work good. you need to watch out for rot though, they are close to the dirt. i wont do anymore because its a pain keeping the soil away from the scion. maybe 3cm+ from now on.

ya i wrote n the stock. if its a permanent graft on myrtle/hylocereus i will always write on the stock...no loosing tags that way

hey, do you know if a grafted loph on a small pedro stump about 6 to 9cm high could be permanent? i mean i know it probably can but i guess my question is if the loph completely covers the pedro stock to where it is out of sight would it kill the pedro? for my perskopsis stock im useing 6cm

as permanent as anything i suppose. ideally it would be bigger, but that will work fine. cover it? i doubt if it would ever completely cover a 9cm rootstock in its lifetime. my biggest 10cm graft on goes down the rootstock about 1-2cm, and it has been going for a while. either way the scion is gathering light so not much worry about the roots dieing from that.

how do you suppose that that one variegated specimen that you had' s root stock died?
