    #6999505 - 06/02/07 11:11 AM (1 year, 4 months ago)

how big does a chunk have to be for it to still have some juice left while after both ends callous over and still throw out roots and grow a new pup ? Ive seen like 2 to 3 inch chunks but i m wondering if you can go much smaller

As long as there is one areole for the cactus to pup from it is physically possible. Although you must remember that the smaller the cutting, the less stored energy that is available to start the rooting/growing process. You can do it, it just takes forever and a day to get anywhere. Really not worth it unless you are just dying to find out or the cactus is in a life or death situation and you have to.

I think there is also a way with chemicals to trick a piece of cactus without areoles into pupping and growing, but I'm not into that shit.

Slices as small as an inch (2cm) can send out roots. Theoretically you could go smaller but the likely hood of it working gets as small as their size. It is also easier to go smaller if you have the growing tip as it is packed full of growth hormones.
