Looking for releif from spore allergy
    #8608146 - 07/08/08 01:09 PM (4 months, 22 days ago)

Hi everybody...I have a problem I'm hoping one of you can help me deal with.

My wife and I have developed an allergy to p. cubensis spores. :frown: So we're stuffed up, sneezing, and itching pretty much all the time now...I  can get some relief by taking claritin, but my other half has a sensitive system and can't take the meds.

If anyone has any solutions, suggestions, or homeopathic remedies I'd love hear about it.

Thanks,
SM

How have you determined you were allergic to cubensis spores?

Have you visited a doctor?  I am very curious on what was said, if so.  Haha.

I have no remedies.  I am just curious.

may be obvious but,
1.Pick before your veils tear
2. use hepa filters in home, not just while cultivating.
My wife has asthma and the filters help a lot. What helps most seems to have been switching to hypo-allergenic bed and pillow covers.
But as far as being allergic to spores, I will say my wifes asthma is aggravated if I let caps open.

I have asthma and allergies, so I'll have to start being more careful about letting the caps open.  Penis envy here I come!

Using a neti pot, taking Stinging Nettle, Quercitin & Bromelain as well as hypo-allergenic covers for your bed.  Vacuum several times a week.

It's got to be really difficult if you and your spouse both have allergies, because then who cleans the house?!  My gf does it so I can actually breathe.  Fuckin' cats.

Thank you all for the responses!

In answer to your questions...

No, neither of us have been to the doctor.

Yes, I agree that it would be a general allergy to fungal spores and not to p. cubensis specifically, but those are the only ones that I'm currently cultivating.

608Bill ~ What kind of hepa filters are you using? I have found several household units to be ineffective.

I too have been shopping for a good quality hepa filter.  The Ionic ones I hear are bullshit and you need one with a motor and/or fan.

every hepa unit i've tried from walmart, home depot, etc..
have really not done the job well, actually, not even noticeably any difference while using them.

I'm curious about where would u find a good one also, without having to go the industrial route, where they are sure to be more then my budget would allow.

I believe spore allergies are species specific.  So far, I only have one species that I'm horribly allergic to, H ulmarius.  In fact, I won't even grow that one indoors anymore.  Once you get a heavy dose of spores and your immune system rejects them, you'll be allergic to that species' spores, even in very small amounts, perhaps forever.  For cubes, the answer is to pick large pins prior to the veil beginning to tear.  Besides, they're at peak quality at that time anyway.

Filters i currently use are holmes brand with new washable hepa filters and pre-filters.
Again, getting rid of any kind of bed with stuffing in it is best thing you can do for asthma, and also pillows couches etc.If you cant replace it get a plastic cover for it at least.
Best types are foam or inflatable types(i use sleep# bed) which cant harbor mites and collect skin cells etc.
Few people know this but the majority of new mattresses you buy with any kind of stuffing in them (especially discount brand)use RECYCLED stuffing! In other words your brand new mattress may already contain a plethora of dust mites and skin cells from old mattresses...brand new.
As far as filters go i think the major reason people feel they get no results is because they under use them.Store bought filters are intended for small areas thus for them to be effective you must have one in every room pretty much, which i do.I also have cats which create a large amount of dander(dried saliva for them licking themselves clean) which is another primary allergen along with mold/spores.My house is also very airtight which also makes filters more effective and necessary.
I don't have asthma but if i shut off a filter or dont change/clean filters regularly my wife says she can feel the difference in that room and usually she starts weasing.

well that's what i argued, and pigs too.
but again it wasn't cost effective.

Like MDS,these people
her argument was it's not cost efficient as mushrooms were not common enough.

...

i said "wtf"

and then I stfu.
