Best damn jar lids......ever
    #8364022 - 05/05/08 04:45 AM (6 months, 24 days ago)

Well I figured its high time that I shared my lid design with y'all. I kinda pieced em together from other lid designs that are floating around here......so this definitely isnt a original concept, just my take on things

Here we go:

Materials:

1. Wide Mouth Plastic Jar Lids:

2. A 1/4" and 1/2" Drill Bit:

3. Red RTV Siicone:

4. 100 Grit Sandpaper:

5. Wide Mouth (90 mm) Snthetic Filter Disc
6. Red Cap Vacutainer
7. Oh yeah........a Drill

Step 1
Drill a 1/4" hole in one side of the lid and a 1/2" hole on the opposite side (be careful not to use too much pressure when pushing down with the drill, these lids crack REAL easy):

Step 2
Take a US Half-Dollar and trace out some circles on your synthetic filter disc:

Step 3
Take a razor knife and carefully cut out the circles like so:

Step 4
Take the sandpaper and scuff the plastic (about the size of the half dollar) around the 1/4" hole, then filp your lid over and scuff the plastic around the 1/2" hole. This is so the silicone will stick to the lid

Step 5
Insert the cap from the vacutainer into the 1/2" hole (it should take a little bit of work to get it all the way in). Then flip the lid over and put some silicone around the base of the vac-t cap:

Step 6
Put a small bead of silicone aound the 1/4" hole. You dont want to put too much because it will squirt out the sides of your filter disc.....not good. Then take the small filter disc and put it down equally around the 1/4" hole. The easiest way I have found to do this is to hold the lid up to a light with the silcone side facing out and with both hands put the filter disc on that way. It will take a few times to be able to master the art of knowing how much silicone to use without it squirting out the sides of the filter.

Step 7
Let your lids sit for 24 hours so the silicone can cure like so:

Well there you go..... these lids are reusable and IMO look pretty damn sexy too

Comments or Questions??

so you reuse the filter discs? how long do they last?

i just made a ton of lids last night, one side with an injector port and the other side just has a hole, i plan on cutting out tyvek and taping it on with micropore tape, but i planned on replacing it every time i use the jar, have you had success with reusing the same filter disc more than once?

Synthetic filter disks can be used thousands of times. I have some that are over ten years old.

You can also use regular silicone. It will easily withstand a pressure cooker. The red stuff works great for exhaust systems or other very high heat applications, but is more expensive.

It only cost 3 bucks at meijers.... Dont know why, Im pretty sure I paid 7 dollars for mine at a hardware shop (the red stuff ie).

Synthetic filter can be used thousands of times aye? Does that go for Tyvek also?
How about Tyvek that has been used one a jar of sugar water lc?

Hi mycoholic, nice pic and teks but i have a question though. I'm french and did not really understand where you could find the filter paper, i just can't find any to order and don't know what kind of shop provides it. Seconde question, as a nurse i know what vacaut looks like and i wonder how you manage to fill the red cap in the 1/4 hole ?you push it into the hole or just over ?

thanks for answering ^^

You can get synthetic filter discs at pretty much any online mycology supplier. I think I got mine at fungiperfecti.com if memory serves me right. Check with mycopath.com, mycosupply.com, and the-shroom-room.com.

And I put the vac-t port in the 1/2" hole, the 1/4" hole is for GE

These particular plastic lids often leak because there is no gasket underneath. Leakng = contam with little doubt.

Nonsense. Obviously you've never used these lids. I've never had a contamed jar when using plastic lids, and considering some of the most experienced and skilled people on this forum use these lids I think your statement holds very little weight.

I have indeed used these "ball" brand lids and they do not have anything but a molded lip on the bottom to act as a gasket and they often do leak when turned sideways to suck out solution. I know this because it has happened to me. They also clearly state "not for processing" directly on the box.

mycoholic...

is there a reason you use silicone for the filter disks as well as the vac caps?

could u use something like super glue or will it not stand up to a PC?

also, say when using grain. and you shake. doesnt the filter disk get moist...then becoming a worry for contaminates?
