How did I do?

OK so last night I cooked up everything. I used the BRF/verm tek using 1/2 pint mason jars with 4 holes poked in the top. Now I have a few questions.
1. I put them under a sink in an unused, clean bathroom with some lights under there with the jars. The thermometer reads around 78 or 79. Does this sound good? 2. Do I keep the lids on tight and the foil on while the jars colonize? 3. Is 12 hrs of light/day good? Do the jars need some exposure? Because several of them are 3/4 covered with foil. Do I need to trim the foil back?
thanks

1. Personally, I think you should throw up the temperature a bit. I used to incubate mine at 80 degrees, but after turning it up to 86, colonisation speed increased noticably. 2. Yes, although you don't want to prevent gas exchange. 3. They don't need light unless you want to induce pinning, which you don't want/need to do until the jars are fully colonised.
I hope I've been of service.

82 degrees is the best temp. but give or take a degree or two won't hurt much. but below 82 is better than higher than 82.

cool, thanks for your help guys....i used the pf-tek guide on the site that uses some corrected BRF/verm proportions, but it appeared that I used a slight bit too little BRF, so I added a small amount over what the guide says. I'll be sure to get a box over these bad boys when I get back from class to keep the light out. I'm really pumped about this...my first grow, I hope I dont screw it up...
Oh yeah, so you say I don't want to prevent gas exchange....well I've got 3 layers of foil wrapped tighly over the lids, which have 4 nail holes in them. Do I need to loosen the foil up a bit?

Figment,
The FAQ on this website says that 86 degrees is the best, although I can't say for sure, I'm just going by that and a few posts.
Also, the fact that I'm growing a tropical strain (Koh Samui) could mean that the higher temperature's more effective, would you agree or not?
P.S. No offence, but your avitar freaks the fuck out of me, probably what it's meant to do though...
Nickmv,
Yeah, from your description I'd say that the three layers of foil are going to prevent gas exchange, I only use one layer, if not nothing at all (probably a bad idea) and the holes in the lid. Even then, if a jar has stalled (often because the mycellium grows over the holes and blocks air) I open the lid (in as sterile an environment as possible) to give them a rush of oxygen, which helps heaps. For now, I'd just have a single foil lid. IF you're lucky, they'll colonise quickly and may finish before they need oxygen, drastically lowering the risk of contamination. If the mycellium slows or stops however, they need oxygen.
Hope I've helped.

84 is actually best, but myc creates its own heat while colonizing by about 2 degrees, so therefore 82 is ideal. there is a graph on here somewhere that plots the rate of growth per degree of temperature. but like i said...it's not THAT big of a deal.

Figment,
Oh yeah, I remember that graph now. And thanks man, I didn't know about the mycellium creating it's own heat, glad to learn something new.
