? about casing yields and "Powdering" dried shrooms
    #4136581 - 05/05/05 07:02 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I've just harvested my first flush (Thailand Super-Strain) using the 50/50+ casing method and I was certainly pleased with insane number of carps produced...but they were all much smaller than what I expected. Shortly after initial pinning, I let the casing get a little too dry for a couple of days (concerns of "overlay") and had virtually no growth over about a 2 day period - once I started misting, the growth immediately continued and then: bam! the vails started opening but I didn't get any of the crazy "PHat" shrooms that i was hoping for.

Question 1: Could the "dry spell" have stunted their potential?, or is there some other way to maximize their size? Anyway I'll be interested to see what the dry weight comes out at for my first flush.

Question 2: What's the best way to convert dried shrooms to a powdered form? Morter and Pestle? Coffee grinder? I'm air drying them in a food dehydrator (w/ heating element removed) and just want to be sure I don't do anything to them that will adversely affect their potency.

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. This board rocks!

im assuming u did the pf tek , which means less than optimal nutes equals small shrooms

From what i've read casing increases your yields substantially from using cakes, however the fruits your experiencing are more likely due to substrate rather than the 'dry spell' If you used the PF-Tek, try using WBS which has more nutes = bigger fruits.

As for powdering, mortar and pestle or coffee grinder are both fine just make sure your shrooms are cracker dry, ie/ use both fan and dissicant. Oxidation (one of the biggest contibuters to loss of potency) will increase greatly once powdered due the increase surface area. Making sure they are properly dried will help to minimise this.

Good luck.

actually, wbs will not produce larger fruits unless you use lots of it.

wbs is best used when it is "spawned" to a larger amount of pasteurized substrate (horse poo is the only way to fly.) thrift store or walmart [new]

and uh... you don't need a dehydrator with the heating filament removed; just one with a thermostat that goes below 100F.
(nesco american harvest snackmaster)

it takes alot of capsules to fit an 1/8 in there.

Really?! Sorry to put up false info. I was under the impression that this was one of the major reason to switch from BRF to WBS. So the only real benefit of using straight WBS over the PF-Tek is colonisation time?! Learn something everyday..... (Sorry to hijack the thread  )

Actually.. if you're switching to bulk and you want something better for casing, use Rye. Staments says it's da' bomb! There's a reason commercial cultivators use it exclusively.

put your hands up!
everyone step slowly away from the thread.
interlace your fingers behind your head and walk backwards.
keep walking.....

it colonizes faster because you can shake it once at 15% col. to distribute the mycelium better.
you want to strive for anything, it should be the use of horse crap
THAT produces large fruits, potent shrooms, and yields that you can take home to meet your parents.

The major reason to switch from brf to wbs would be cost I think. 50 lbs of wbs is about $8. Brf is like $1 per pound.

Mortar and pestle or coffee grinder both work well for powdering.
