SCORE i see some growth. perfectly white stringy(inoculation points have circles about 2-3 cm in diam) but heres what happened
I have been checking the temp for the past two days(thats how long since inoculation). I havent seen it get above 83. I just checked the min max though and it says it has gotten up to fuckin 98. WTF how? I know thats way to high i think it may have happened when i was starting out. I just reset the min max so i guess i will see but now i have to go to mexico for 3 weeks. Im leaving them with my brother but im worried ive already killed them. I have them in a plastic box with a black bag around them and a heating pad under the box. Any suggestions? help a noob earn a star

I suggest you incubate at room temp.

I don't want to do that because the room temp isn't very stable(he keeps his house pretty cold) and the temp Im keeping them at right now seems to be exciting growth. Is there any way to know when the temp spiked like that

Incubate at room temp. You'll be gone for 3 weeks- how cold does it get in there? Keep up this heating pad craziness and you WILL have problems. I know because I read it on this website.

Can you keep in a cupboard above the refrigerator? The temp there is usually a little warmer and you must remember the inside of the jar temps gets a little warmer than the outside temps.
Too high temps will allow for contaminates to grow easier as well. When I was young and dumb, I used to incubate and I had a bacterial problem on like 50% of my jars.
No way of really knowing when the temp spike occurred.

Room Temp. Is the best way to go. 60-70 deg Fahrenheit.

okie dokie will do. Ill just take he heating pad out and hope for the best. Idont want to keep it above his fridge because im worried about the mold up there. Do you guys think the high temp has done damage already? And will low temps like 74 slow growth? thanks for the help

74 is pretty damn near ideal. I back that up with simply saying that I've read literally 100s (ok maybe like 120 lol) of experiments and experts' opinions. Much warmer and you get into ideal bacterial blooming conditions.
I've been running my incubator at 80º on the dot, and things are fine. It's been a bit cooler than usual here, and I'm looking for "near optimal" conditions to get these guys going. BUT it's a bit more of a gamble than letting the mycelium do its thing at 70º.
The problem with a heating pad is HI-LO-HI-LO...the thermostat kicks on the pad, gets wicked hot. Then turns off.
Try a TiT (tub-in-tub) incubator if you feel you must incubate. Get a fully submersible fish tank heater with a control knob. I use my photographic thermometer, get some 80º water, and submerge the heater in it. Let it sit, unplugged, for a few minutes. Re-check the water temp. Adjust as needed. Then plug the heater in and find the 'sweet spot' with the thermostat. You are now at 80º. Let this run in your test container (I used an iced tea pitcher) and re-check in 1 hour.
If it's cool, you're good to go. Mount the heater in the TiT and incubate away, keeping an eye on inside temp through your pimp cool thermometer.
Heating pads are damn near useless in this hobby, so I've read. Good luck!

i don't think you have killed your myc, just reduced the growth. myc growth occurs at some optimum temperature depending on your spp/strain (upper '70s Farenheit for cubes), and at higher and lower temperatures will still grow albiet at reduced rates. There is an upper temperature limit where cell necrosis will occur due to protein denaturaion (prolly about 60 degrees C), although i haven't seen any data on cube cell necrosis rates and temp.
anyhow ~
incubate at room temperature. in the long run it will be just as quick if not quicker that incubating at 80+ F. for some reason everyone is going out and spending $40 to build these incubators that don't seem to be improving myc pop growth very well.
just set them up on a cupboard or something and forget about them for a couple of weeks

Yeah, probably the best advice!
Now I'm kind of wishing I would have kept some jars out of the incubator...I almost didn't build one, following Nonlinear's advice, but it is May, and usually we're sweating here, but it's still so cool that it gets to 59-60º in our well-insulated house at night (obviously no HVAC running right now $$$)
I was afraid that colonization would slow down being exposed to mid-60s temps every night. But I'll need/want one for the winter anyway, so my $40 isn't a total loss regardless.

hey man, an incubator is cool, just keep in mind that if your temp is too high you will have slower growth (and also helping along bacterial growth).
if you're just worried about night temps dipping, why not just place your shit in a cooler? this should help buffer any sudden temp drops. your jars also have a good amount of water with high heat capacity, which means you relly need to move a lot of heat around to get a temp change in your substrate. something to think about.
i used to live in a basement apartment and it would get quite cool down there in the winter, but i was able to get good colonization up in a cupboard.
good luck!

I was actually thinking of that, in reverse, for summer- a TiT as a water jacket of sorts.

I am currently using a styrofoam cooler as an incubator, my house is far warmer during the day than the night. Leave the cooler open during the warmer time close it when it start's getting drafty. Work's like a charm! Little high maintence though.
