Pressure Cookers...
    #8379589 - 05/08/08 09:22 PM (5 months, 14 hours ago)

Hey Guys, looking into my second grow at the moment, and want to get myself a pressure cooker. Im a little confused though after reading the guide in the cultivating section. From what I can see, there seems to be pressure CANNERS/COOKERS, adn then just pressure cookers. The pressure canners/cookers seem to have the PSI gauges on the lids, which form what ive read in teks seems to be what is talked about (reaching a certain PSI) to steralise jars. My question is this, will it make a difference to get, for instance, and All American or Presto Pressure Canner/Cooker with a PSI gauge, or willa normal household Pressure Cooker do jsut as well, even tho you cant see the PSI (as far as i can tell). Heres some ebay links of what im comparing...

Trust me get one with a PSI Guage because for spawn 15 PSI is great but for LCs and substrate 5 and 10 PSI is perfect. The guage will pay off in the future.

Was hoping you wouldnt say that, lol. Its so hard to find decently priced pressure cookers in australia with guages, im looking at spending at LEAST AU$250 for one, thats costs about AU$100 in the US (without postage to au obiously). ITs so annoying.

I owned that 23qt Presto before giving it to a buddy. I never had a problem with it. I would also recommend getting one with a PSI gauge.

Agreed, lol. Its cos noone in aus uses pressure cookers let alone pressure canners, so theyre all imported, and cos fo the size and weight, import costs for shipping are insane. Really suks.

You dont sterilize substrate you just pasteurize it.

A PC with a gauge definitely is a big advantage, though isn't a must.
It really depends on the producer and the information you'll get with it.
Since I didn't want to pay 300€ for a PC, i got me one without a gauge.
The booklet includes all the temps that are regularly achieved with it, depending the stage your stove runs and the stage of the ventile you're using.

At least I never had a problem with it.

However, I know, that accurate information are rare among PCs and often the producers themselves don't have a clue of how their product works.

Therefore I'd say again: Get yourself one with a gauge!

Which is actually a bad move.
You're likely to achieve better results without pasteurization, than with sterilization!

I use Doc's WBS Tek and have never had any problems. So if im doing it all wrong than that is news to me. I know you pausterize spawn but never heard that about substrate.

No, it's the other way around.

The WBS, that's inoculated with spore solution is the spawn.
The coir, dung/straw or whatnot is the substrate.

look on craigslist or in your local newspapers. There are a lot of people with pressure cookers laying around gathering dust. I put a wanted ad on craigslist and got hooked up with a used All-American 921 for $50. This was about 3 weeks after my friend had ordered one online from the US, and had to pay a shitload for shipping and duty, etc. I think it ended up costing him about $300.

Also, if you're going to spend cash on a PC, I would advice spending a bit more to get something of quality construction like an all-american. don't try to save a few bucks and get a crappy little cheap guy with a rubber seal, etc. keep in mind that the All-American is the definitive PC and will hold some value so you could resell it in the future if you want.
