What could this possibly be? (PIC) PLZ HELP
    #4283293 - 06/11/05 11:54 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Could it be genetics? i cant for the life of me figure out what in the hell is causing over 50% of my casings to grow like this.. Has anyone had this problem before?

My Method:

Pf tek style jars

Injected with spores (from my own prints, but have had a few sucessful runs from making my own prints)

Incubated at a constant 83 until colonized.

Cakes broken apart, put into a pan that is first wiped with alcahol, then filled on the bottom with 1/2 - 3/4 inch vermiculite wetted with h202 solution (10 ml of a 3% solution for every 90ml of "pur" water)
2 Cakes per pan, then cased with "jiffy mix" wetted with the same h202 solution.

Casing mix and verm are all pre-sterilized.

Casing Incubated for 4 days, then cold shocked, no patching.

Introduce to terrarium where in 4 - 8 days pins are seen that are often covered with white.
I am thinking PH might be off, or possibly a Co2 buildup.

Any suggestions on what i may be doing wrong?

What's your lighting schedule? Also, are you spraying Lysol directly in the fruiting chamber? I can't tell if it's a mutation or simply upside down caps from lack of light.

I have the light on around 15 hrs a day, staggered though, maybe 6 hours, off for 4 hours while my roomates are around, then back on when they take off for work for about 8 more hours.

Also, my misting bottle is filled with water from the "pur" filter, ill try switching to distilled de-ionized water, see if that helps any.

That's a bit too much light in my opinion, but otherwise I have no idea what's doing that. Never had that myself.

Ill try cutting back on the light, im sure there is no lysol getting on these casings, maybe a CO2 buildup could cause this problem? i am getting some poly fill later and im going to poke some holes in the side of the terrarium for my next run and stuff with polyfill.

Honestly, to me....it looks as if theres a contam hidden in the substrate under the surface. It doesnt look like a co2 problem, but that may be the case. I dont think your lighting schedule should cause this.. It is pretty odd if theres not a contam. When you harvest, just flip out the casing and check the bottom and sides..do it away from your other casings and chamber though.

I have already broken this casing apart, it looks nice, white and no colors, smells only like mushrooms. This problem is really beginning to baffle me.. Im thinking the PH of the casing layer may be the problem, I just wish someone had already had a problem like mine..

So have those two casings been growing under the same conditions? If so, could we see a shot of both casings (and maybe a couple close-ups)?

It's not a ph problem with your casing layer...you would be getting contams if it was.

Looks like mutants to me.

The casing next to it was inoculated from the same syringe, and treated in the exact same manner as the one pictured, the one in the background produced 10.5 grams of beautiful mushrooms (dry). But this one does this, I have had multiple other casings that have had the same problem that were in seperate terrariums, and had "normal" casings that were from the same batch. This problem is becoming more frequent now though. It's really baffling me..

New syringes(strain)are always to have. You must check for contams. If you have spores left from this grow try again.GL

Plastic bag method, used a playing card that was wiped with alcahol, then covered with clear tape and trimmed. Surface of now tape covered card was wiped with alcahol along with everything else it could possibly touch. Once the smell of alcahol was gone the cap was placed on the card and covered with a shotglass (same alcahol procedure, no smell). Wait 24 hrs, re-wipe the top part of the card and let dry, then take off shotglass quickly, pull cap off using pin, and put the print into an unused ziplock bag, no air is in the bag (i still have multiple prints). Print then injected with clean water in a clean syringe(all pc'd), Water is swished around and sucked back up by poking needle through bag that was wiped with alcahol and let dry. Needle was flame sterilized before and after both putting the water into the bag, and sucking the spore solution up.
(hope there was enough detail)

Wiped, and let dry untill the smell of alcahol was gone

Sadly, i have already picked and patched the one casing, it then succombed to green mold, i now have a new casing in a bleach cleaned terrarium that is having the same freikin shit happining to it.. It has also happened at a terrarium not located at my house. I'm just considering ordering fresh spores, and trying that out to see if possibly i got some fucked up contaminant that looks like mycelia or something or just messed up genetics..

It's def. mutes, that i'm sure of...

Do you spray anything near the Chamber or in your room?

Maybe it's something you frequently use and don't know it...
