Malt/Honey Water????
    #671529 - 06/10/02 09:36 AM (6 years, 2 months ago)

My dog tried honey water and had limited success. He made up his first batch of Light Malt today and there are chuncks floating.
He mixed 4% Light Malt with Spring Water. Boiled the water first, then while still hot mixed it into the Malt. Everything disolved very well. Then it was PC'd for 15 min at 15 PSI. When the jars were taken out of the PC there were chuncks of stuff (carmelization) floating.
Is this stuff useable?
How do I prevent this from happening next time?

Thanks,
Bob

Its not carmalized; malt (and extract) has a lot of protein that becomes denatured upon boiling. Brewers refer to it as "hot break". The mix is still sterile and most if not all the sugars are still in the liquid. If you want it to look pretty, boil it, strain it, and then pressure cook it. As it is, It should not hurt anything.

ok about the big diff between light malt extract and honey water i had asked the guy at mushroom-madness if when using the malt extract method if u can use all the liquid in the jar ti inject into subtrate jars instead of jus picking out the white stuff in the honey water jars and he said yes so there for u can get much more out of the extract tek then the honey water tek

Thanks for the help guys.
Wnted to try this because I can't seem to get a honey jar right. I was doing Ok and made several casings that did fine, but lately the stuff just contams. I'm glad that the chunks are OK, now if I can beat the contams.

Thanks,
Bob

cbull??? I`ve used all the water.
Just make sure you shake it up enough and you`ll get the mycelium spread around.
And it colonises fast.

I know this post is old, but I thought I should point out that those chunks are also visible with just plain honey and water. They are the color of honey, amber. I haven't seen them finish, yet, though.

Afoaf just did a Karo tek and when she made the syringe she
just grabbed the white stuff. But you are saying just shake it
up and then suck all the fluid out? You don't need to just use
the white stuff?
It sure does speed up the growth rate tho :nut:

Can you please tell me 1- the right proportion of honey you use, and 2- how much time should I leave the water/honey mix in the steam for sterilization?

Last question: would it be right to try liquid mycelium in some big bottles for later use? how long is the myc storable?

thanks in advance
