build a computer for under $1000
    #4360120 - 07/01/05 03:03 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

i'm just curious what kind of computer you all would build with $1000 budget assuming there is no shipping or tax. i put this one together while bored at work today. everything came from newegg.com and the prices are correct as of july 1.

______________________________________________________________________
$210.00 Lian Li PC-V1200 Silver Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case

$4.49 COOLMAX Ultra ATA-133 IDE 12" Round Cable BLUE

$133.00 GIGABYTE GA-K8N 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX Motherboard

$95.00 GIGABYTE Geforce 6200 128MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card

$190.00 AMD Athlon64 3200+ Socket 939 Processor

$85.00 CORSAIR 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

$116.00 Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 10,000 RPM SATA150 Hard Drive

$120.00 OCZ 520W Power Supply with OCZ ConnectAll universal connector. (ATX, BTX, SATA, P4 and EPS12V), and OCZ PowerShield power leads for VGA and HD.

$42.99 NEC Silver IDE DVD Burner

$996.48 = total
______________________________________________________________________

the motherboard has onboard 7.1 audio, dual gigabit ethernet, 4 x sata2, 4 x sata150 for a total of 4 sata h/d's, 2 ata133 for a total of 4 devices (whether more hard drives or optical drives, PATA RAID NV RAID 0/1/0+1 JBOD, SATA RAID - NV RAID 0/1/0+1 JBOD, Additional SATA150 RAID - RAID 0/1/0+1/5, PCI Express x16 = 1, PCI Express x1 = 2, PCI Slots = 3, 4GB dual channel pc3200 RAM.

the theme for this computer is upgradability. with the 939 pin mobo, i have room to upgrade to new 64bit procs for a while to come. i still have room for 7 more sata h/ds and 3 ide h/ds if i ever want to make this a server that could hold over 4TB of stored info. and, i have room to expand the 1GB of RAM to 4GB of dual channel RAM.

You forgot your power supply dude!

Here's how I would amend your list if I were so inclined:

A MUCH more budget-oriented case:
$33.50 DYNAPOWER C8214.68.0757 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower

I'd throw away the included PSU and get an:
$75 Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W

With the money you save on that, you upgrade the vid card to:
$169 eVGA 128-P2-N368-TX Geforce 6600GT PCI Express x16

And for God's sake man, why would you choose the Hitachi Deathstar over a Seagate for the same price!?
$123 Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150

This actually leaves about 23 bucks extra. You might want to put that into a swankier case or something, but personally I'd just pocket the cash. Another thing about the vid card, you could easily swing a 6800 if you used AGP instead of PCI-E, but I guess that wouldn't fit into your upgradeability plan.

alright, i edited out the second hard drive and added a great power supply. as for the video card, i am not a gamer at all. my main purpose was to find a video card with HDTV out and that one suited my needs. hopefully, this will be the last case i will have to buy for the next few decades. lian li just makes such nice cases. eventually i will fill all the available sata and ide spots with hard drives, but i can do that as need be. i'd like to RAID everything. especially after just losing everything to a hard drive failure.

like i said before, this system is built just to provide a platform for future upgrades. this "platform" maxed out with what is available today would give 4.8 TerraBytes of storage, 4GB of dual channel RAM, and the best AMD can build.

the computer i am on right now i built in 1997. it is an AMD k6-2 450MHz with 3 x 256MB of ram (768MB total), 30GB of storage, soundblaster live 5.1 sound card, and some generic video card. it still runs fine, but has recently started t show it's age.

hopefully the computer i am going to build will server me as well as the one i have been using for the last 8 years.

what is a good affordable rackmount company? I need one with lots of space for multiple hardrives.... by multiple I mean at LEAST 2 terabytes.

$1000!? I built mine from scratch with about $500, a few years ago, when 1ghz processors were top of the line. I still use that machine too.

There's no need to drop over $200 on a case or even over $100 on a HD. Stuff is crazy cheap these days if you know where to look or have hookups.

this is the case i want for decades to come. to me it is worth the price. the reason for dropping over $100 on a hard drive is because i want the 10,000rpm drive as my system drive. the next upgrade would be for a second 10,000rpm drive to RAID them and also a large sata2 hard dive to use as storage.
