 Something you may already know regarding IPv4

I saw the editor in chief of PC mag on the news talking about how IPv4 addresses will run out in roughly a year and a half. He predicted that if that's the case then the cost of the internet will skyrocket.
Is there going to be a mad scramble to migrate to v6 or have most companies and institutions already started? I know the college I work for hasn't.

Yep, this was big news back in 1996... they have been predicting that IPv4 addresses will "run out" for twelve years now. I suppose they will eventually be correct. By the time it becomes an issue, everybody will be running IPv6 which has a large enough address space to uniquely identify every atom in the known universe with room to spare (literally).

Is that taking in to account all NAT implementations? I thought that alleviated a lot of the problem, or are we still running out even with NAT in place?

We're not really running out, because we can use NAT. But if we had IPv6 we wouldn't need NAT, = awesome

NAT is used to allow devices on a LAN to access the internet, since private, non-routable IP addresses are used on LANs.
NAT does not eliminate the need to have an IP address assigned to you by the ISP, it only eliminates the need for multiple addresses. Instead of one for each device on your LAN, you need one for the outside edge of your router.
In short, even with NAT in place, we will still eventually run out of IPv4 addresses.

Ya, I know what NAT does, that was my question, even with NAT the public IP's are still running out...

The problem is, they are poorly assigned. As you can see here, Apple has as much address space as all of Africa.
