Linux... sell me on it.
    #8572803 - 06/27/08 10:42 PM (4 months, 24 days ago)

So I'm building a new computer soon, with 8GB of RAM. Which basically forces me to get Vista instead of XP... which in my limited experience with it... blows greatly.

I've been hounded by you Linux people for years, so now's your chance to convince me. Keeping in mind, I know basically nothing about it.

I'll probably end up dual-booting OSes anyway. But I'd like to know a few things:

- Which Linux build is the most stable, and "noob-friendly", but also allows for some tweaking? I'm pretty savvy with computers.. I know my way around them, and I don't mind doing research... but I don't want to have to learn a programming language in order to run my OS and do basic tasks and maintenance.

- Is there any potential conflicts I'd need to be aware of. Specifically with gaming and most software... I play a lot of different games. Am I going to be able to play my games on Linux? Does most Windows software work with Linux? Does Linux support DX10?

- Anything else I should know?

Thanks.

wiki's got alot of info, should hold you over till someone chimes in.  i havn't tried linux before, but i might be setting it up in the near future so ill be watching this thread.  i think the main difference is gaming.  i was actually surprized but apparently you can game on linux now, the problem is you have to find fixes/patches pretty much for every game you wanna play

If you dual boot it youll probably end up never using it, you may wana start with a Virtual Machine app such as VMWare      Server/Workstation or Microsoft Virtual pc...can run another  OS from Windows.

I use to use Ubuntu which was nice and quaint.  Did everything I needed it to.  Problem with Linux, and this is just personal, is that I've been using a few programs for so long that their alternatives don't do it for me.  Examples:

Winamp - been using it since it first came out 10 years ago.  Nothing beats Milkdrop.

Photoshop (and all of Adobe products) - I don't care what people say, GIMP is not Photoshop.  Plus, I've been using Photoshop for YEARS, and don't want to learn another image editor.

It takes a lot of work to get things up and running.  Enabling MP3 support was a bitch, might be better now.  And don't even get me started on getting dual monitors to work.

I'll stick with what works and that right now for me is XP.

Doesn't photoshop work under wine?

Gimp is clunky and the UI needs a lot of work. I can't use it.

What you got 8gb of ram for? Gonna have a 6gb super fast ram partition?

CS3 does not.

ubuntu has become easier than windows.  if you have common hardware you don't even have to mess around with drivers like you do with windows.  everything just works and it comes with the open office suite, gimp, a torrent client, vlc, disk burning software and more, all ready to go right after install. there are no bullshit spyware/anitvirus programs you have to deal with either.  you can throw the install disk in and have a fully loaded system in 15 minutes.
i've become far too spoiled and lazy since i started running ubuntu.
you won't catch me setting up a windows box around here.

windows software (games, photoshop, whatever) that you want to use will probably be your only problem.
like mentioned above, there are some applications that you can find no alternative to.

i only have two suggestions

get an nvidia card because they are very well supported in ubuntu.
this will make enabling your nvidia driver as simple as clicking a few times and rebooting

and you should probably dual boot, that way you can use whatever you feel like.  the frequency that you need to use programs that you can only use in windows will most likely be the main factor deciding how much you use linux.  if you don't play games all the time or frequently depend on other windows only software then you probably find yourself using linux more and more.

ProjectM doesn't even come close to Milkdrop 2.0's visuals...

if u wanna try linux, i recommend linux mint (gnome/main edition).  it is built on ubuntu, but has all the mp3 stuff sorted and restricted drivers as well.

Yes, do put ubuntu on your new computer, then virtualize windows xp.

1. Download ubuntu

Click on "Download Now."
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

2. Install ubuntu from the live cd you just downloaded/burned.

3. Install virtualbox

System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
search for 'virtualbox' and install 'virtualbox-ose'

4. Virtualbox will show up in Applications -> System Tools

5. Install windows inside of virtual box (super easy)

6. . . .

7. Profit!

My rule of thumb for others:  If you are doing a lot of direct-X (microsoft), go with ATI and if doing a lot of opengl (everybody else), then go with nvidia.

My rule of thumb for me: go with nvidia.

> then virtualize windows xp.

I've been impressed with the VM stuff.  It runs pretty smooth, is darn close to native speeds, and when windows crashes, my machine is still running, just the 'windows' window is dead.

> Linux... sell me on it.

Completely depends upon what you plan to do.  However, now is a good time to learn.  XP is dead, vista is almost dead, and in another year MS is supposed to release Vista's replacement.  You can learn Vista, which will be obsolete in a year, or you can learn Linux which will be around for a long, long time to come.

If you need to be sold on Linux it probably isnt for you. I havent had any problems running any programs in Linux. I even run Age of Conan, though it lags like shit. I suggest dual booting until you get used to Linux. I still dual boot for gaming because I hate lag.

If there was more support by companies like NVIDIA, LOGITECH, ECT there would be a bigger Linux base.

To be fair, Microsoft has been known to strong arm hardware vendors to NOT support the opensource movement.  Oh, you want that "Vista Compatible" sticker for your video card... guess what, remove any opensource drivers and you will be in compliance with the Vista licensing rules.

i have been using linux for years and havent owned a windows machine in at least 6 years and i love it. linux is kinda hard to explain. lots of people use it, but when you really get it, you will feel crippled when on a windows machine.

I realize that but no matter what the reason is it can be a bitch to get hardware to work because of the lack of support. Still, I have friends that can get anything to work on Linux. I am not as savvy as them though.

just try it out man, its pretty cool.  I use both linux and windows personally, the app I use for web development at work is windows only, but for everything else I use linux...I personally liked PCLinuxOS much more than ubuntu or mint.

peace
