Wireless Issues

So my shitty HP laptop has had another catastrophic cock-up: my wireless button no longer enables my wireless internet. It doesn't even show up on my network connections, and the HP wireless assistant program won't even open. I don't know if it's hardware related or if it's just another error in a string of problems I've been having with my HP. I'm considering reformatting the hard drive but it seems excessive and I don't know how much stuff I'll lose if I undertake that route. Anyone have suggestions?

Nine times out of ten, this will be hardware. Go into the device manager and look at the device tree under network adapters. Does it show the wireless adapter? If not, then almost certainly a hardware problem. If the wireless adapter shows up in the list, but with a red x or a yellow !, then it is probably a software issue.
On the nice side, the wireless adapter in HP laptops is almost always easy to replace and fairly cheap. There is usually a 'door' on the bottom of the laptop that covers a removable wireless card. The card will have an HP Spare number (hp sp# 123456-123) on it somewhere. Go to partsurfer.hp.com, type in the spare number, and you can order a replacement online (assuming you are in the US).

Well I ran a system restore last night to a point where my wireless was working and now it's just peachy Very happy. The device had actually disappeared from the network adapters list, which made me think it was hardware related but I think it should work well now.
