imap synchronize vs subscribe, could someone explain?
    #8447703 - 05/26/08 05:29 PM (4 months, 15 days ago)

Ive just switched to IMAP instead of pop3, and I've got a few questions that I cannot find the answer to ANYWHERE. I tried google, wikipedia, official websites, and the specification documentation on the IMAP4 protocol. Needless to say, I'm either blind, or the explanation of these 2 seemingly big features are not documented very well.

Anyways - I just want to know the difference between "synchronize" and "subscribe" using IMAP. I've been using thunderbird and "the bat!" as email clients, and both have checkboxes to enabled both. Each program had "subscribe" checked as default, and neither had "synchronize" checked.

Why the hell wouldn't I want to synchronize? I thought the whole point of IMAP was that there was no synchronization, it was all working off a single account on the server.

And while we're at it, what is "subscribe," Just a fancy way of saying "check mail on startup?"

Thanks in advance to the gurus.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/IMAP:

You can control which folders are visible. You "subscribe" a folder to make it visible, unless its subscribed by default or you disable "Show only subscribed folders". With Thunderbird you right click on a remote folder and select "subscribe" to get to the dialog box that lets you specify which folders should be subscribed.

Quote:

Supports a offline mode which can be used to keep a local synchronized copy of a remote folder. A change to either folder effects the other folder, the next time you synchronize. Some users may find it easier to use a message filter to automatically make a copy of a new message instead, if they're only concerned with the inbox.

Offline folders typically are synchronized when you switch to working offline. Thunderbird also supports a option to automatically download messages for offline use whenever you open a folder or it detects new mail.

ah, thank you much! I was looking for documentation under the impression these were features of the IMAP protocol, but it's obvious that they are features of the email client, so that's where I should have been looking.
