Math Help (Please! Urgent!)
    #8346341 - 04/30/08 03:34 PM (6 months, 20 days ago)

Hey,

I have a third-year economics exam tomorrow and due to various reasons (my anxiety disorder which stops me from being able to concentrate/do work pretty much at all) I don't really know any math (in particular, differential calculus).

This image is typical of the type of differentiation required.

I know I'm in a bit of a fix, but all I need to do is pass this exam, so if anyone could show step-by-step how the below example works, I'd be really, really grateful.

Thanks :sun:

you just do a partial derivatives with respect to p1 it looks like, as in you treat p2 as constant. as in do d/d(p1) to both sides

Even just describing what I need to do (e.g the names of the relevent rules etc.) would be a big help.

Well, in terms of ease of explaining it, first just expand the terms out.

i.e
(p1-8)(145.2-20p1+10p2)
, multiply that through:

then youll have various terms like, some number, some number * p1, some number * p1^2, and some number * p1*p2.

You take the derivative of that which would be the following cases:
just a number, derivative is 0

number * p1 = just that number

number * p1^2 = 2 times that number*p1

number*p1*p2 = number * p2

HOLY SHIT

the fact that the step with expanding the brackets had been ommitted made me think some arcane rule was being used, when in fact it was just regular differentiation

thank you so much, I'm a freaking moron
