When you're logged in on an IM service, you are connected to one central server and so does everybody else. Hence there is no simple way to tell which IP is associated with which contact.

I will guess these weird messages you received are spam. In that case you simply need to deactivate receiving message from contacts not in your list. This option is off by default in most IM programs. Go in privacy options and somewhere you can block all except contacts on your list.

What he said. Unless they try to create a direct connection to send files/live cam/voice you won't get their addy.

Use wireshark, its free and works with both linux and windows.

If it is a centralized IM like AIM, you'll need to get the person to connect directly (send a file or pic) before you will see the real IP show up. P2p type apps like soulseek will show the real IP of the person you are connected to.

Either way there is a lot of information to be gained by analyzing the packets. Wireshark takes the packets apart so you don't need to decode all the packet headers by hand, its really an awesome network troubleshooting tool.
