More likely that we just outcompeted them for resources.

I'm not an expert on this by any means, but the neanderthal was a highly successful organism. Being a humanoid one would think they would be quite versatile. I doubt they would simple not be able to find food because other humans were around. They were probably killed off.

No matter how advanced they were, when a more advanced species competes with them for the same niche in the same environment, that more advanced species is bound to overpower the other. I don't believe paleontologists have found evidence of any widespread warfare between the two species, so the competition thesis seems to be a more likely fit.

I watched some shit on discovery channel that suggested that cro magnons fought with another humanoid species. It was a few years ago though.

I saw that also.
but they seemed to present it in the context of competition for resources, somewhat paralleling paradiggy's point.
sure, they probably fought, but it wasn't an organized campaign so much as it was a battle for food and shelter.

I know evolutionary theory.
Humans and (I am assuming) Neanderthals have the ability to trump traditional mechanisms that hold other species in check. Their ability to occupy such a wide variety of niches, coupled with the low population of humans when Neanderthals went extinct would leave them many places to go if resources went scarce. We most likely killed them off, which I believe is the leading theory.

We'll never know for sure... I like the simple evolutionary theory that Paradigm gives. If it had just been a violent clash that determined the victor, I don't see why we would have come out on top. Neanderthals were bigger, stronger, their bodies were more adept to the cold, etc... However, when it came to hunting, the tool record shows that modern humans had a clear advantage. Living in France 40,000 years ago was not a treat. There definitely wasn't much food to go around. Modern humans were able to use their intelligence and communicative abilities to create much more advanced tools that were more effective in taking down prey. I know a few people who study and make stone tools. It's real neat. I should have gotten into anthropology.

The Islamic terrorists and communists are the ones with the primitive minds. We need to kill them all and eliminate their genes from the population.
