Will Portabellas grow on coir?
    #8306641 - 04/19/08 11:37 PM (7 months, 9 days ago)

I had a grilled portabella burger last night for the first time and was stunned how great mushrooms can taste, so I'd like to try to grow my own. I've read that they will grow on a straw/hpoo mix, but will they grow on a coir based substrate? I'm very experienced with growing cubensis, and for the most part it sounds like they have similar growth parameters, they just like cooler temps. My normal substrate is Coir/Coffee/Gypsum with some kelp meal to boost the nitrogen content. Also, I'm planning on going to a local organic food store to pick a couple up tomorrow to clone some tissue onto agar and was wondering if they would colonize rye.

Are there any other edibles/gourmets that will grow on coir? It's the most readily available substrate I have access to.

I've grown Shitaki on coir and I'm sure oysters would.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but, since you mentioned shiitake, I'd love some advice. Just this morning I knocked up 4 quarts of rye grain w/ shiitake using prints made from the first flush of a commercial block.

I read an article (1994) that said shiitake could be grown on oatmeal! Once the rye colonizes, I'd love to spawn to some bulk substrate and was looking/hoping for a suggestion. I have H/poo, straw, and coir at my disposal. Could probably come up with oak sawdust.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

We have RogerRabbit and alohamedicinals saying Shiitake won't fruit from coir on one hand.

And Gobblin who says he has gotten them to.

Next on 60 Minutes.

Yeah ! It's always good to experiment. They kept telling me that shiitake won't fruit on grain.  So I pulled a couple of grain cakes out and POOF.

I've heard Port's can be grown on wheat straw. Heard from a great source as well.

Shiitake will fruit on plain grains, but poorly.  Most strains will not fruit on coir.

I've never had a good flush of any agaricus species on non-composted material.  A few odd fruits will pop on uncomposted substrates, but if you want a commercially viable harvest, the best known substrates to date are all composted.
