mushrooms and oxygen
    #8422304 - 05/19/08 10:29 PM (6 months, 10 days ago)

I have a small grow room (12x30x10) and one of my most consistent issues is heating/cooling the place during the winter/summer. It would be easy enough (the place is well insulated)but i need to bring in so much air to keep the co2 from getting too high that it makes it very difficult to control the temperature. I have found that even with the co2 low enough to keep the oysters from getting too stemmy fewer mushrooms form than should and my shiitake often abort and fail to form caps. Has anyone else had this problem and how do you overcome it? I've almost gotten to the place where i want to buy a oxygen concentrator to see if that helps. thanks...

if your dimensions are feet I sugeest hooking ventilation up to a room that has plants growing in them. Plants love CO2 and shrooms love oxygen see perfect harmony. I have made many a few and the system works like a miracle.

Ive grown shiitake inside plastic bags, and invirtro(without opening the bags), I'm guessing your problem is (low)fluctuating humidity, perhaps bad strains, or bad substrate. i don't think o2/co2 is your problem with the shiitake

well, as for hooking up the room to a green house, i have been planning on doing that for a while now, i am going to have the green house built by the end of the summer. I hope it will help but i was unsure how much co2 plants actually absorb.

It may be true that i have not so great strains, but i am always trying new ones and i always have the problem with them producing aborted mushrooms especially on the first flush.

It has been great temperatures here in Ky for over a month now and because of that i have been running the intake fan constantly for a week or so now and found that the mushrooms are all fruiting far better than they have been in quite a while.

As for the humidity, i found a great solution for that, I bought an ultrasonic pond fogger and put it in a watter barrel with a toilet bowl adapter connected to a watter hose to keep it full. works like a dream, if you turn off the fan in an hour or so you can barely see you hand in front of your face from the fog.

hey shroomjew, what is the ratio of the size of the mushroom grow room to the greenhouses that you have built?

I have only done smaller experiments. the plant grow area was completely sealed and had a 3ft2 floor space and ws 7ft tall. 400w switchable light for both stages of growth fit 36 pot plants tightly. the mushroom area was a 100 gallon box I built myself before u pump the air from the shrooms into the green house u will most likely have to dehumidify the air. I had too. if you want the cycle timings just pm me and for the plans.

A Heat recovery ventilator was my first thought, though a heavy spore load and the humidity might cause some problems.
