Reishi Fruiting Conditions. Substrate Quantity ?'s ect. ...

I currently have this bag of reishi fruiting

when i first opened her up to start fruiting, i made a few viles using small tissue samples and grain

i now have that grain grown out on a few hand fulls of eucalyptus wood chips

i use black potting bags as containers when using pasteurized substrates. i get these from my local hydro store.

i am sitting out side pasteurizing more wood chips to spawn to and some questions arise
MY QUESTIONS: I have noticed that reishi growers often have a nice sized chunk of substrate with only a few, at most, mushrooms growing.
How much substrate is recommended for fruiting reishi?
i am moving in a few months and would like to be able to fruit as many as i can. i think the smaller the substrate , the faster it can be spawned, the sooner i have more fruits.
When is the proper time to pick these beautiful mushrooms?
they grow kind of slow so it is going to be hard to tell when they stall out.
any information on reishi would be highly appreciated. i really like being in the presence of these mushrooms and want this grow to work out as well as possible.
thanks for reading,
psil.
sorry for the shitty picture quality. i only have my computer camera to use. i have to hold my computer up to take the shot.

Hey psilociety,
Congratulations on growing Reishi
As for how many fruits, it is more dependent on the culture. My blocks your size shoot up as many antlers that can reasonably be fit above a sawdust block, and they often touch and then fuse together into one big forest
For substrate size I have been using 5-7 lbs
Proper time depends on which morphology it takes on. If they form only antlers, you know when the antlers have stalled because there will no longer be a white bulb, it will turn red. If they decide to make conks, though, I pick them before they start making a huge mess (spores)

thanks andrew, i also read the white part is due to a warm climate. even if it is hot will it still change to red?
have you ever tried fruiting only using a few quarts of substrate?

The white, fleshy part at the leading edge indicates it's still growing. When that disappears, it's ready to pick. If you want spores, you can wrap a piece of wax paper around a conk to collect them as it grows. RR

There seems to be a few schools of thought on eucalyptus and toxicicty. In Brazil and Australia, many edibles are grown on eucy with no ill effects. I think someone got sick from mushies they picked growing from eucy, and assumed it was the eucy, so suddenly they warn people and the story grows.

could be; also could be some interaction between ganoderma and eucy that affect only some people, carriers of some HLA allele or some shit like that

Perhaps they were china-sourced, heavy metal laden eucalyptus?
