 Is growing edible mushrooms feasible?

I realize that there are huge farms that have the growing process refined so much that "home cultivators" probably can't compete. But, is it possible to cultivate some type of edible mushroom in a basement or a barn and make decent money off of it?

Sure, there is always room for the little guy too. Do a small test grow and see if you can find customers. You can grow 1000 pounds, but if you have nobody that wants to buy them then your shit out of luck. Specialty mushrooms will be the way to go, most of the big farms grow button mushrooms. GL

I think the home cultivator can make a few dollars here and there by selling small grows of specialty mushrooms to restaurants and the like... But in order to make anything more than some extra drinking money you have to do some serious investing of time and loot. If you want to have even moderately large crops you need to think about having: sizeable grow rooms with climate control, a large laminar flow hood, a large autoclave or retort, and lots of time out of your schedule to do all the labor.
In my view home growing is either mostly for the fun of it with a few bucks here and here, or it's an actual business venture with major investment.

Haha, no kiddin'. I wouldn't want to grow buttons or ports anyway. Boring! You can buy em for cheap in the store, and there are so many other cool species out there to try growing that have supah dupah health benefits.

If you plan on putting on the guise of having a constant supply, you need to walk the walk. That means at least four different grow rooms that house four different crops for rotation. Your supply will be inconsistant otherwise. Don't plan on shutting down for two weeks because of spawn run. And then another two weeks until harvest. How long will your customers stay with you if you leave them without product for a month?
Growing extra mushrooms is a good way to meet restauranteurs and get free lunchs and dinners, but to deliver a constant supply is a real investment in time and space.
If it turns out you enjoy growing mushrooms that you do not personally consume, you may want to consider something larger or perhaps working on a consistant supply.
